Absolutely superb meal. Couldn’t fault it, the ambience or the service. A truly wonderful experience and I look forward to returning. Went at lunchtime to celebrate my birthday. Had the Great British Menu and it was even better than I’d hoped for. Lovely touch to have a signed menu to take away too.

Excellent evening. Service at table was first class. Service on arrival and for pre-dinner drinks was pretty poor. We were not greeted, had to find our own table for drinks, (some tables hadn't been cleaned). I had to ask the lady outside the French if someone would take a drinks order, and had to repeat the request some minutes later, as we were still waiting. We arrived at 5.50 for a 6.15 reservation, and were not served drinks till the time we were supposed to be seated in the restaurant. Unacceptable for a restaurant of your standing. Nevertheless, we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and the food was of a consistently high standard. If the occasion arose, I wouldn't hesitate to book at the French again.

The restaurant is perfectly intimate - an exquisite setting. Favourite dishes included the pre-dinner nibbles -especially the trout - and the lobster dish was sublime. Front of house were ok. Chefs who delivered dishes to the table were excellent and clearly loved their jobs.

Thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Service, presentation and food quality all excellent. Particularly enjoyed the dishes “from the counter “, lobster, cod, chicken and prune dishes.

We had a lovely evening. We had chosen the Great British Menu 2019, which we had seen on TV, and we were not disappointed. Everything was delicious - couldn’t single out a best dish! Service was very good with each of the dishes explained, and of course the setting is stunning.

We had an excellent meal at The French. The wine selection was spot on for the taste of each course. My dining companion didn't rate the 'Tater 'ash of Cumbrian sirloin', but you can't win them all! The added bits and pieces were delightful and the malted sour bread and beef butter was the stuff of legend. Great meal and great ambience. Why no Michelin Star???
