Amazing food and cocktails. Full of rich flavours and presented beautifully. Staff were very friendly and atmosphere was intimate. This is destined for a Michelin star. Favourite cocktail: shrub. Favourite dish: Golden Empire

Very enjoyable dining experience, superb dishes, excellent wines and very attentive and friendly staff. The French achieved its usual very high standards and how Adam Reid has not achieved a michelin star for the French is beyond me. We enjoyed all the dishes, I especially enjoyed the Cumbria Deer the best and probably the stilton and prunes the least, mainly because I am not keen on stilton cheese. My wife however enjoyed this dish a lot as she loves stilton cheese so "horses for courses" The wines as usual went very well with each course, however we would have preferred less sweet wines (3 sweet wines) this was understandable as there were 3 dessert dishes, but not too keen on sweet wines in general, so only scored the drinks 4 out of 5. We love the atmosphere of the French, very relaxing, music at right tempo and volume and you can relax from the minute you arrive until you leave. It is hard to believe you can spend nearly 3 hours over a meal but the time passes quite quickly in general. This is the 7th time we have visited the French and needless to say it wont be the last. We will definitely be back for my wife's birthday in February and also look forward to your special Event Nights which we try to attend as well.

As it has been voted one of the top 50 restaurants in the country we had high expectations. Not all dishes on the four course menu were good. The hake was tasteless and the green sauce unremarkable. However the red deer was cooked to perfection and the bilberry sauce sublime. The wines are very expensive. We chose one of the cheaper wines at £55, a 2014 burgundy, which was excellent and perfect with the bilberry sauce on the red deer.

Outstanding dining experience! All the staff were extremely welcoming and as I was dining alone this was very much appreciated. I had selected the chef's counter and I was able to see and chat about each dish that I was served with the chefs. Everybody was totally engaging and knowledgable about each dish which they presented with pride. I had selected the 4 course option and in addition I also ordered the 'Empire Dessert'. The flavours in each dish were incredible and memorable. The flight of wines that accompanied each course were well described and excellent. I will remember each course with pleasure, but the highlight of the day for me was the 'Empire Dessert' for both the flavour and visual appeal of the dish. Having worked in the travel industry, I have been fortunate to have eaten at many great restaurants over the years. I read the reviews about Michelin stars (or lack) and all I would say is that sitting at the chef's counter chatting to the chefs during the meal enjoying the outstanding combination of flavours in each dish, I would rate this lunch as one of the most enjoyable dining experiences that I have had. (which is what really counts - for me).

Saved up and looked forward to the night for a couple of years. Enjoyed every course. Favourite dish for Elaine was deep friend oyster. Mine was crumpet and easy peeler. Good for us to keep the menu. Suggestion: if possible, a list of ingredients if requested.

We visited Manchester specifically to visit the restaurant. The surroundings of the Midland Hotel are just amazing and very beautiful. The service was fantastic and the staff were super attentive to all our needs. Refilling wine / water and anything else we required. They even took my phone to charge for me! We opted for the 9 course menu and couldn’t fault it from start to finish. The desserts were stunning and we paid extra for the Golden Apple dessert. The only criticism would be that there was no red meat. One meat course which was chicken. Lamb or beef would have been a great addition to the menu. I would highly recommend the French - food amazing and the dining experience was beautiful.
