It was exquisite, with a delightful array of dishes and a well chosen wine flight to accompany. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the flavour combinations were superb.

We didn’t enjoy the choice of music being played, too harsh and too intrusive, it became a topic of conversation competing with the food which became irritating. There was very little table dressing which didn’t appeal. The decor is greatly improved since our last visit. The service was very good. Food and presentation was excellent

My partner and I had a terrific dining experience at The French. The ambience and decor of the rather splendidly shaped room was comfortable yet considered. The service - from all members of the team that visited us, was without exception warm and friendly. The team were knowledgable, considered and really helped to make the evening. The food was, without exception, wonderful.

We loved our dining experience at The French - it was our first visit & we'd definitely return. We really appreciated the friendly but highly professional service from every member of staff which we felt contributed to the ambience of the restaurant.
We chose the 6 course tasting menu & were surprised to find it expands to about 9 courses with the selection of appetisers brought out by the chefs!
We thoroughly enjoyed each of the stunningly presented courses but our particular favourites were the crispy trotters & the sublime clementine dessert. I still can't quite believe how that dessert was executed - it looked amazing!
We decided not to choose the accompanying wine flight with our tasting menu but instead, with some expert advice from the sommelier, chose a French Reisling which we felt complemented the varied courses very well. We were also pleased to see the restaurant promoting English wines & our pre-dinner glasses of English fizz were very much appreciated.
The only ( very minor) criticism we have is that we were allocated a table at the end of the restaurant next to the small bar area & were unable to appreciate what the chefs were doing at the opposite end. Another time we would request a table that is more in the centre of things.
Overall though this was a memorable experience & one we'd be happy to repeat!

Not great. Ghastly music. Not even offered the menus until asked. No list of wines to accompany

My partner and I had the nine course menu as usual, which with hors d'oeuvres, bread and other bits and pieces was really fourteen servings! We have been coming to the French for some time, first when Simon Rogan was running it. Adam Reid has actually improved things, which is saying something as it was an excellent set up under Simon's stewardship. Food is as always top notch, with the standard of ingredients of particular note. There is never a dull dish but the Cumbrian Lamb is still the favourite, closely followed by some excellent sweet dishes. The last two times we have been we have tried the 'wine flight' with the meal (it adds to the expense not just for the wine, but for the necessity of a room in the Midland afterwards rather than a drive home!). It makes the meal a real experience, partly because of the unusual and interesting wines (a rose sake - who knew?), but also because of the comprehensive explanation by the sommelier of why the wine was selected for the dish, tasting notes etc. Part of the fun of an evening at a restaurant of this standard is the 'theatre' of the service and the interaction with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. The staff at the French are immensely well trained and probably the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic I have come across. It is never a cheap night out, but it is still one my partner and I are talking about some weeks afterwards, so I suppose we are still getting our money's worth! Not surprisingly we will be returning again soon.
