Restaurant description

Adam Reid at The French perfectly marries the old and new, and is a dining experience to be remembered. While the restaurant is steeped in history, the menu offers modern British food that delivers consistently excellent flavours, made using only the very best seasonal produce available.

The French offers outstanding levels of service, warmth and elegance that in turn, create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere like no other in Manchester. Guests can choose from small, medium or large set menu and wine flights, offering supremely elegant tasting journeys.

The French restaurant boasts 4 AA Rosettes and features in the Good Food Guide 2019 at Number 13, the only restaurant in the Greater Manchester area to make it into the top 50 of the prestigious guide. The French also ranked 79th in The National Restaurant Awards 2016.

    Great experience, fabulous food and the staff were exceptional. Favourite dish from the Signature menu was the cod.

    We had the Great British menu option which is four courses by the chef he first devised for TV. Each was delicious and totally original. From a beautiful starter of beef butter with bread and an exquisite bowl of mini chopped delights. The fish and meat courses- a quite simply melting piece of cod with sauce and the aroma of the chip shop and chicken on another level. Desert too was excellent. We choose the wine flight to accompany these and each wine was perfectly served and matched to the course. Service by chefs and the house staff was impeccable and typically professional but friendly in the familiar Mancunian style we love. Very glad we celebrated my wife’s birthday here. Loved too the music and the setting. All should be proud of this venue.

    I went to the French with my sister to celebrate my 30th birthday, and I cannot express how wonderful it was. All the staff were delightful, warm, inviting and incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. The food was OUT OF THIS WORLD, and the style of the restaurant meant it felt intimate and you were not overhearing other people's conversations. It felt like your own, special experience. Thank you for making the memory incredibly special.

    Lovely food. Great, knowledgeable staff. Favourites:- dark bread and dripping, fish and chowder. Quite expensive though - even compared to equivalent London venues.

    Overall very good experience from beginning to end . Front of house waitresses bar staff attentive but not intrusive . All courses outstanding with particular reference to the cod poached almond milk and the special take on treacle tart ( light and lots of flavours) . Chicken a bit garlicky for me but the texture sublime( chef told us the procedure for brining) . The dining room is pretty and the music great and just the right volume. I liked all the changing dining ware . It was quite dark at our table and I would have liked a bit more light - candle holder (?) had no candle . It is expensive but it was a treat and I’m glad we chose to come .

    Excellent from the moment we arrived. Service from the front of house team was friendly and attentive, excellent wine pairings and recommendations from Vlad the sommelier. Each dish was brought to the table by one of the chefs, they were all very friendly and very knowledgeable about the dishes they were explaining; the smoked Halibut being my personal favourite! Overall a really excellent experience, and a perfect celebration for my partner's birthday, I can't wait to book again.

    The whole afternoon was fab, food amazing staff amazing, thought the restaurant decor was lovely, and we were fortunate to meet Adam, which just made my hubby day

    Great atmosphere great music out of this world food the tater ash was my favourite dish by far and had a great overall experience there
