Restaurant description

Housed in the rustic setting of the original Spinning Block of Holmes Mill, 1823 Bistro Bar & Grill Clitheroe is a spectacular venue in which you can enjoy all-day service, including locally sourced dishes and well-crafted cocktails.

The 1823 Bistro Bar & Grill menu uses locally sourced, market-fresh ingredients from the Northwest to create stunning presentations. To start there is savoury lobster tortellini and pan-fried scallops, and grill dishes are made from hand cut meats sourced from suppliers specialising in grass-fed breeds. Hearty presentations include lamb rack with pont neuf potatoes, and roast turbot with seafood chowder.

A wide range of handpicked and -crafted wines and spirits are available, as well as ales and modern cocktail classics such as espresso martini and bellini pours. The open plan kitchen and stylish décor with contrasting textures make for a buzzing and elegant ambiance at Clitheroe’s 1823.

Holmes Mill’s 1823 Bistro Bar & Grill is a 4-minute drive from Clitheroe Interchange Train Station.

Brilliant food and service - really enjoyed the evening. There is an issue re. parking however - only 3 hours - this isn't long enough to relax and enjoy the meal at leisure and chat with old friends. We asked and were told that the parking time is adhered to strictly - one of our party is disabled but we hadn't come in her car and we had to leave table earlier than we wanted and then wait outside on street where she was very cold whilst waiting for husband to bring car round to side street. Think 3 hours should be extended - even if in cinema if want a drink or food too - not long enough at all. We would have had more drinks if able to stay longer so also you are losing some income. The other couple have a voucher too to come to stay at your hotel and have dinner etc. - (got it as a present) - but due to parking rule are now going to change venue to Waddington ( I think that is what she said - as can park there OK).

Delay in service, took a while to order drinks and meal. Then delivery of same very slow. Felt we had to keep catching the eye of staff. Drinks presented differently to the norm, aperol in an unusual glass, same with the raspberry cocktail served in tumbler with large amount of ice, totally different to before and not an improvement sadly. Loved the pianist and setting but shame as not the same experience we had first time round. Won’t be repeating unfortunately.

The situation of the restaurant is great, part of an old mill with a lively outside drinking area and large food store. The actual restaurant appears to be part of a larger hotel and is bright light and nicely furnished. The menu is quite extensive with plenty of choices. The food we chose was excellent, beautifully prepared and presented. The whole experience was spoilt though by the erratic service, the bread ordered to fill the gap before the main course arrived was not delivered until after the meal. The sauce ordered for the fantastic steak didn’t arrive until reminded and then it was not the one ordered. The wrong desert menu was offered, the drinks waiter disappeared, cutlery was missing but that all said the food was worth ignoring the problems.
