Housed in a grand old shooting lodge overlooking the Cambrian Mountains, Gareth Ward’s Michelin star, 4-AA rosette restaurant serves alternative British cuisine, using the UK larder to produce tasting menus that take diners on a journey.

There is the choice of 2 tasting menus served each evening, and a shorter set tasting menu for lunch, all offering numerous small courses, packed with beautiful flavours of land and sea. Showcasing the best of Welsh ingredients following the seasons, expect the likes of Welsh wagyu beef, Welsh lamb from the Dyfi Valley, and innovative dishes like ‘Not French Onion Soup’ and ‘Mackerel Sweet & Sour’. Enticing desserts on the Ynyshir menu include Gareth's take on a tiramisu, all served alongside an extensive wine-list while overlooking the mountains.

On the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, Ynyshir looks out across stunning scenery. Aberystwyth is a 30-minute drive away.

We greatly enjoyed our lunch at Ynyshir. The succession of tasting courses were inventive and well explained. Staff were friendly and attentive without being 'in your face'. We especially loved the 'Not Onion Soup', the Mackerel and the Tiramisu. My partner adored the Wagyu beef. The digestif at the end was an added treat. Thank you all so much for such a memorable meal. (Only small negative - we would have preferred quieter background music).

Our experience we negative. I emailed them to let them know about dietary requirements twice and asked them to confirm, they did not. Two days before our meal, they emailed to confirm the dietary requirements, then said they could not take our booking as some building work was not finished, and that we could come another day (v.sort notice!!). The problem was that this was my mothers 74th birthday, and we were leaving Wales on the day of the planned meal - her children live in different countries and we had com together for this event. The most the restaurant did was give names of a couple of other restaurants that may be able to take us but were not like for like (my mum was looking forward to a "tasting menu" - that was one of the points of our booking) , but I felt they did the absolute minimum, were not courteous, and did not really take responsibility. I expected much better and am sorely disappointed that I made the booking with them in the first place. I have never had this kind of situation before, so cannot say for sure whether other restaurants would have acted differently but I suspect so based on the level of service I received (they reply to emails and seem keen that the customer is cared for etc). Clearly we will not go back.

The food was amazing but I don't think the chef table has a plus if you are looking for some action, the chef's table is positioned in a way that doesn't allow almost any interaction at all.
Moreover I found the higiene of the employees highly cuestionable due to the following
1- we saw one of the assistant chef liking a spoon and then using it to cook
2- we witness a scene between two of the assistant chef discussing about their sock and so touching them and after that kept on cooking without washing their hands.
So if you want to enjoy your mail just don't go to the chef table ...... “What the eyes don't see, the heart doesn't grieve over.”

A lovely restaurant in the Welsh countryside. Although the cooking was very good and well presented with excellent service, most dishes were water bathed and then covered in Miso based dressing, which meant than many courses tasted very similar and had a soft texture. The Mackerel dish not only didn't taste of mackerel it had the texture of baby food, so somewhat disappointing. Menu needs a rethink to add variety of flavours and tastes - without using a water bath and miso!

Although the wine list was interesting, the lack of a wine flight was disapointing

Food was delicious and lovely service. Loved the rustic plates, mugs etc. Enjoyed the non-rushed experience and thank you for showing us some bedrooms, special treat. Beautiful location, perfect views. Only disappointment was that we didn't hear or see a word of Welsh all afternoon and to think that we were in rural Wst Wales, what a shame.
