We had afternoon tea at the Donnington valley hotel. Lovely staff. Fantastic cakes/scones. Lovely surroundings. Extra special as the weather was sunny and warm and we were able to have a walk around the grounds afterwards.

Awarded 2 AA Rosettes, The WinePress restaurant at Donnington Valley Hotel serves a diverse range of seasonal British cuisine complemented by over 400 wines by the glass. Amongst Berkshire’s green hills, Donnington Valley’s landscaped gardens are a delightful setting for al fresco dining, afternoon tea, or enjoying after-dinner cocktails.

At the heart of the kitchen is Head Chef Kevin Barrett. Having spent 4 years at Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons under Raymond Blanc, Kevin has created some exciting seasonal menus. Dishes include mouth-watering venison with smoked potato, red cabbage and almond crumble, and Newlyn plaice with Devon crab and potato risotto. To finish you can enjoy bitter chocolate pave with salted almond caramel and clotted cream.

WinePress dining takes place in an informal, bright space with vaulted beams straddling the spacious balcony-lined dining room.

A country location not far from town, WinePress Restaurant at Donnington Valley Hotel is a 7-minute drive from Newbury Train Station.

The afternoon tea was lovely and very reasonably priced - I was expecting to pay more. The scones and petit fours were pefect and so well made, and there was plenty of clotted cream and jam for us to use without having to ask for more. My personal favourite was the lemon curd pastry that they made.

The tea and the coffee were perfect too, not over brewed, not cold, and plenty of it. My son would recommend the sparkling apple fruit juice they have, he absolutely loved it, and it was really thirst quenching on a hot day.

The only thing i would say is that the finger sandwiches could have had a bit more taste, but the bread they were in was lovely and they were still enjoyable.

The service was attentive without being pushy, everything arrived quickly, and after a check back that everything was ok we were left to enjoy the food and the afternoon. There was no rush to get us out ready for the next people or anything like that, so we were able to enjoy our afternoon tea at a leisurely pace.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for both service and food.

It was a very nice setting with lovely grounds. We had the extra special tea with a glass of prosecco. The food itself was very good. There are however a couple of points. There were four finger sandwiches, four very small cakes and two scones per person. We have had afternoon tea at Blenheim Palace for £19.95 just £2.00 more than the Wine Press tea. At Blenheim we were offered a choice of teas to drink, more sandwiches and cakes were also offered, all at no extra charge. We looked at the restaurant with the thought of booking for dinner on another occasion. The menu looked very attractive and reasonably priced.

Disappointing. A belated birthday afternoon tea with two friends, fourth visit, won't be back.

We went for a champagne tea. The cakes were fabulous. Sandwiches a bit dry but ok. The waitress we first approached was about to go home and frazzled. It showed but we all had a laugh about it! Others may not have been so accommodating . More than anything though, the venue lacked atmosphere. Some background music would really help in that vast space to prevent it feeling sterile. We really enjoyed the time spent but music would have improved the moment!

Very nice food and service. Impressive wine selection, wine list was at least 30-40 page thick.

The service was ok . The steaks we had were so fatty we could only eat half . The chips were burnt. Then we had the 5 cheeses and port the cheeses had no taste. So over all not good .

Lovely ambience, nothing is too much trouble, very knowledgeable staff. Haddock fish cake starter was out of this world.
