I've visited for afternoon tea twice here now. Booking is very easy and afternoon tea is beautifully presented with a large selection of teas and cocktails. Staff are friendly, helpful and accommodating - well worth a visit. Book a vault if you can!

Named in honour of the French philosopher, Voltaire Cocktail & Champagne Bar is a subterranean hideaway offering a light brunch and afternoon tea by day, then gourmet burgers and homemade liqueur cocktails into the night. Complete with private vaults and an al fresco cigar terrace, it is a sultry spot to escape the bustle of the City.

The gourmet burger menu boasts a seared foie gras burger served on award-winning aged beef, and the German prime beef burger served with sauerkraut, in a laugenbrot bretzel roll. Earlier in teh day, try the light brunch with free-flowing prosecco or the signature Voltaire afternoon tea and cocktails. From the drinks menu, try Voltaire’s Cooler with dark Rum, apricot Brandy, handmade lime and jasmine syrup, lime juice and apple juice, or French Margarita containing Excellia Tequila Blanco, triple sec liqueur, crème de mure, blackberry purée and handmade thyme and lime syrup.

The Grade II-listed building that houses this bar was once used as a prison, and subsequently as a bank. Voltaire has honoured this history in its name (a pun on ‘vault’) & by offering luxurious private vaults with a bespoke service. Each of these 9 vaults is named after the French philosopher Voltaire’s contemporaries, such as ‘The Thinker’, ‘The Statesman’ & ‘The Playwright’.

In the heart of the City, Voltaire in Blackfriars is a 6-minute walk from St Paul’s Cathedral. Blackfriars Tube and Rail stations are across the road.

    nice place, great atmosphere

The food was lovely but the service was absolutely dreadful. The restaurant wasn't that busy so the staff should have been a lot more attentive. The waiter who took our order made us repeat everything three times because he wouldn't write down our order and so was struggling to remember what we asked for. He even had to come back to the table a couple times to clarify what we ordered. When we got out drinks he managed to mess up the order which could have been avoided had he written it down.

Our food took quite a while to arrive but it was very nice. We had finished eating when another waitress came by and asked us if everything was OK. We said yes and then she just disappeared. We were expecting her to take away our empty plates but she never returned. We waited 15 mins for someone to clear our table and eventually we grew tired and had to go up to the barman to ask him for the bill.

We declined to pay the service charge as the service was so poor. The wait staff weren't attentive and my friends and I would never eat at Voltaire again.

We were 4 and had booked there an afternoon tea. It was a great time. A choice of teas, salty sandwiches and scones were delicious, the cakes a little bit too simple. May I suggest to add a hot water pitcher on the table in order to enjoy the best of our tea bag. Voltaire bar is on the basement, so no view but a very comfortable place. There is a pianist singer but when she leaves, she is replaced by a music non suitable for the place. We took advantage of a great deal on Afternoontea.co.uk. Otherwise, it would have been a bit overpriced.

Went to voltaires for afternoon tea. Made to feel very welcome by the waitress Rosalina. She was brilliant. The booths, live pianist and overall setting made for a luxury event feeling, without being overbearing or pompous. The range and selection of teas was good, and the sandwiches, scones and cake were lovely. We had mini cocktails which were selected to match the food, they really added to the experience. I booked this as a valentines treat for my wife, and she loved every minute. I can't recommend this enough, and we will definitely be going back again. Thank you to all at voltaires.

Robert, our host, was brilliant! The whole experience was on point, from the gluten and cheese free delights, all perfectly made, to my friend thoroughly enjoying her birthday. Amazing service all round, from the special requirements, to the phone calls, to the beauty of the venue, the music, and worth travelling to Blackfriars, a place we'd not normally meet at!

Lovely afternoon tea, cosy seats, twinkly lights, live music and excellent food. Delicious sandwiches and canapés, nice scones with jam and cream and tasty cakes and sweet treats. A good range of teas to try and staff were happy to refill teas as often as we liked at no extra charge. We paid extra and had 3 mini cocktails which were tasty and rather fun! Handy location in the Crowne Plaza hotel, opposite Blackfriars station and with a nice walk along Thames for those who want to afterwards!

Scone and banana cake was lovely. All they types of creme were perfectly soft and properly sweet. Liked the service, she was such an angel. Tea was a bit all light though.

The afternoon tea food and drink was good enough, no issues, but obviously not the standard of top afternoon teas in London; very good value; the appropriately attentive, welcoming, and friendly staff were exceptional; and the comfort, ambience and acoustics of the bar were perfect.
