The cosy Trattoria La Ruga in Walthamstow Village serves authentic French cuisine to east London, with an exquisite menu which changes daily. Intimate and romantic, the restaurant has a small terrace for al fresco dining, and offers a selection of fine wines.
Using seasonal ingredients, the La Ruga menu could include starters of mussels in white wine or snails in garlic butter sauce. Menu specialities include whole Dover sole in butter and lemon sauce, wild boar steak with grilled vegetables in porcini mushroom and cream sauce, and the fillet of beef on a crostini with pate and red wine sauce.
The wine selection includes the work of small, artisan growers to provide pure, refreshing complements to La Ruga’s fine French food.
On the upmarket Orford Road in the village area, La Ruga in Walthamstow is an 8-minute walk from Walthamstow Central Tube Station.

A local favourite, you need to reserve in advance, or be prepared to go away and come back when a table becomes available. We enjoyed a wonderful 9th wedding anniversary meal last night. Special offer was £15 for two courses. Sauté potatoes for 2 persons an additional £2.50, same goes for green vegetables for 2 persons. Kalimata Olives also £2.50 as was the lovely homemade Turmeric and cumin bread.. Starters: tricolour salad, ie avocado, mozzarella and tomato with freshly made pesto drizzled on top. Six king prawns chargrilled with aioli dressing on the side. Mains were Butterfish steak with lemon butter and capers. Mine was a whole baked Seabass cooked perfectly, which was tender, fluffy and memorable. Deserts are all home made - we opted for the Hokey Pokey ice cream - homemade honeycomb ice cream, very generous 2 scoops which we happily shared, finished off with decaf latte for me, Americano for my other half. Including drinks, Diet Coke for one and a generous serving of Prosecco, came to £54 excluding service. Lovely crisp table linen, modern French jazz music, attentive and friendly waiter.. This is why I so love Walthamstow Village!!

Always a nice evening at La Ruga: great food with dishes that change regularly (often daily) according to what is in season, friendly and welcoming staff, and a relaxed atmosphere. It's probably the 'fanciest' restaurant in Walthamstow Village (which isn't necessarily saying a lot as most of the others seem to be aiming for hip), but La Ruga is not remotely 'precious' and so it's a good destination for a special dinner that avoids fussiness (a romantic dinner date, a visit by the in-laws, etc.). This combination doesn't come cheap, so it's hardly a weekly -- or even monthly -- destination for us, but you could easily spend a lot more on a comparable dinner in Central London.

Good food and service - enjoyed

Although advertised as an Italian restaurant the cuisine is authentic French. The menu is imaginative with several original and common dishes, e.g. I opted for turbot which was excellent. My colleague chose the fish kebab which he also rated as excellent. The prices are very reasonable and the table d'hote constitues good value. The wine list is balanced and well thought out to complement the dishes on the main menu. The ambience of the restaurant is relaxing and conducive to conversation at normal levels, and the service professional and friendly. My first visit to the restaurant was impressive and we shall certainly return. An oasis of superb cuisine in Walthamstow.
