The cosy Trattoria La Ruga in Walthamstow Village serves authentic French cuisine to east London, with an exquisite menu which changes daily. Intimate and romantic, the restaurant has a small terrace for al fresco dining, and offers a selection of fine wines.

Using seasonal ingredients, the La Ruga menu could include starters of mussels in white wine or snails in garlic butter sauce. Menu specialities include whole Dover sole in butter and lemon sauce, wild boar steak with grilled vegetables in porcini mushroom and cream sauce, and the fillet of beef on a crostini with pate and red wine sauce.

The wine selection includes the work of small, artisan growers to provide pure, refreshing complements to La Ruga’s fine French food.

On the upmarket Orford Road in the village area, La Ruga in Walthamstow is an 8-minute walk from Walthamstow Central Tube Station.

I went to La Ruga with my parents after coming once before with my husband and I was even more impressed than the first visit! Great atmosphere, fantastic staff, the food is so delicious and beautifully put together, I ate the tri coloure salad to start - which was fresh and tasty, then the cod with spinach and bacon - seriously hearty fish dish with a delicious sauce. Dessert is not to be missed, the creamy gelato with fresh raspberries and the grapefruit sorbet was insane!! The staff really make the evening - super friendly and helpful they make you feel at home - I eat out a lot all over London and this is a real hidden gem - wine is AMAZING and such a great price! Honestly one of my favorite restaurants and it really made the weekend for my parents who were staying with me!! THANK YOU LA RUGA :)

My wife and I paid a second visit to La Ruga as it's local to us and we'd been previously been with a group. Restaurant is relaxed and elegant with tables also set outside in the warm evening air. Very continental feel. Our hosts were genial and attentive and the wine, bread, olives and whitebait went down well, however I was disappointed that the salmon main had just sold through when we arrived a little past 7 - I would hope the chef's fish order would ensure a longer presence on the evening menu, especially during the late summer months.

Moreover, the mains weren't to the standard of the dover soles we had previously enjoyed. My wife's lamb shank was not quite melt-in-the-mouth as many people prefer it, plus the sauce tasted mildly burnt. My tiger prawn pasta was well-seasoned and cooked to my taste, but was swimming in olive oil - tipping the almost-empty plate revealed about three tablespoons of it gathered at the side. Way too much and let down what was otherwise a very reasonable dish. Nonetheless, there's worse places to eat of an evening and we will likely be back to try further dishes on the daily-changing menu, particularly the fish courses. Friendly service, authentic feel and very good location.

Been coming to this restaurant for some twenty years. Recently been redecorated and new staff, unfortunately, we will be looking for another restaurant in the area, they didn't live up to any of our previous visits ,
