The cosy Trattoria La Ruga in Walthamstow Village serves authentic French cuisine to east London, with an exquisite menu which changes daily. Intimate and romantic, the restaurant has a small terrace for al fresco dining, and offers a selection of fine wines.

Using seasonal ingredients, the La Ruga menu could include starters of mussels in white wine or snails in garlic butter sauce. Menu specialities include whole Dover sole in butter and lemon sauce, wild boar steak with grilled vegetables in porcini mushroom and cream sauce, and the fillet of beef on a crostini with pate and red wine sauce.

The wine selection includes the work of small, artisan growers to provide pure, refreshing complements to La Ruga’s fine French food.

All in all, really excellent food and great wine list but the service really was patchy. Our table of four had the tricolour salad and smoked fish for starters and loved am every mouthful - then bream, duck and fillet, all of which were cooked brilliantly and delicious. There was also a lovely, clearly labelled selection of French wine.

The main issue was the service. Everything took a very long time. There was missing cutlery was and the waiters didn't notice. Our candle was out and no one bothered to change it. We had to prompt out waiter for the wine we ordered a good half hour before as we were finishing our starters. This was then spilt on the table when being poured. Water and bread weren't offered and had to be requested. Little things that mounted up, unfortunately caused by absent mindedness rather than being busy. A shame as the food is great, but some training of the waiting staff wouldn't go amiss.

Excellent food. Lamb and duck dishes not overcooked as some places would. Service attentive but not overly so.

We had a lovely evening at La Ruga. This was our third visit and we brought our friends, who had never eaten at La Ruga before. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal: my Dover sole was beautifully cooked, as were the steak, lamb (although my husband commented on the "skin" on the sauce, which he thought may have been microwaved) and sea bream. The goat's cheese tart starter was mouthwatering. I'm embarassed to say we also managed delicious pear tart and toffee bread desserts. All served by friendly, informal staff and appropriately priced. Our friends were impressed. We will be back. Thank you.
