The only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel, Thornbury Castle is an historic building which once played host to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Classic heritage cuisine is served in the hexagonal-panelled main dining room, with its heavy oil paintings and roaring fires.
Modern internationally-inspired dishes are combined with traditional favourites, created using only the finest and freshest ingredients, sourced from the castle’s own gardens, local markets and nearby suppliers. Highlights on the Thornbury Castle menu include poached & grilled veal rump with smoked garlic, gnocchi, olives, broad beans & foie gras, tomato & courgette pesto risotto with walnut, parmesan & rainbow radish, and glazed lemon verbena tart with raspberry, elderflower & sherbet for dessert.
The Castle cellars hold an award-winning selection of vintage & carefully-selected New World varieties, as well as wine from the castle’s own 500-year-old vineyard. Hearty roasts are served every Sunday.
Thornbury Castle in Bristol is a 15-minute drive from Patchway Rail Station.

Went here for Father's Day! First time here never again!! Receptionist lovely, was put in this tiny dark room away from main restaurant 3 tables in room, waiter was to overpowering couldn't understand him & cocky, Sunday lunch is a set menu unless your told or it's not even on the menu cards, two course no matter what, when asked for the bill waiter said are we sure we want it for prices I do not no! When he came back with bill he then said we would be charged for two courses when we only had the main each & didn't no this was a set menu! We said didn't no & took the starters off, with all that this roast is not all that the best roast we have had is ronnies in thornbury brilliant, but we all felt shunned in this room and judged by my my husband arm tattoos & funny enough the only other people with tattoos we're sitting in the same room! I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary next year & enquired about rooms told by waiter look on website my husband said would be nice to see rooms but no shunned again we will never go back here & already told my parents about it this is a no go place for next year celebration, looks a beautiful place but no!!! Let down Father's Day

Sadly I found out afternoon tea very disappointing. It was served in a small room and there was a party of 7 immediately next to us, this made it hard for us to easily talk. The scones were served cold and were not fresh, they were dry and crumbly. There was no hot water served to top up the tea pot so we had to keep asking more. The lid to the tea pot did not match the pot and kept falling off. The total bill came to £70 pounds for three , overall I did not feel the experience was worth the price, even in such a lovely setting.

I would highly recommend Thornbury Castle for dining. The food was wonderful and the service was fantastic. Lots of choice on the A la carts menu and the wine list was extensive. We had a wonderful meal!

I think the service was excellent and all the staff were friendly and welcoming. My boyfriend and I had the afternoon tea as I had been given a voucher for my birthday. I thought the tea itself was really delicious and there was a good range to choose from. However, the sandwiches in the afternoon tea were really disappointing, the bread tasted bland and stale and the fillings were lacklustre and didn't taste particularly fresh. I think when you are eating in such beautiful and high quality surroundings, you expect the food to reflect this too. I think overall the afternoon tea selection needs improving, the sandwiches were poor and this really let it down.

I first dined at Thornbury Castle in 1974 and, despite living in London for the next 40 years, have visited half a dozen or so times since then. I have always found the food to be wonderful, but even more so, the ambiance and service are absolutely superb. I have eaten in many excellent restaurants in my life, but the Castle is and has always been a stand-out experience. Just to sit in front of the fire in a room where Anne Boleyn may be chattered with her Ladies in Waiting, or sipped a delicious glass of Thornbury Castle wine in a room where Henry VIII may have flirted with the daughter of a Duke is a major part of dining at the Castle, but add to that the exquisite food and the friendly but respectful and attentive staff, and you get the whole package - one which few other restaurants can offer. I was born in Thornbury so have known the Castle all my life, even when it was the private home of the Stafford family, long before it became a restaurant and then a hotel, and have always loved the grounds and the stunning buildings. I even stayed there once as a treat for my 50th birthday, so have enjoyed all aspects of the Castle experience and can honestly say I have never been disappointed. The food is, to my mind, Michelin quality, and is complimented by a fine selection of wines. I love that one can have drinks in the beautiful sitting room whilst reading the menu and giving one's order, before being seated in one of the oak-paneled dining rooms. A return to the sitting room after one's meal means one can enjoy a coffee and petit-fours whilst relaxing in front of the fire on one of the remarkably comfortable sofas. All in all, it's a wonderful evening out, and I very much hope I get another opportunity in the not too distant future to enjoy the Castle's hospitality. It is expensive, but not prohibitively so - maybe afternoon tea next time?

Delicious meal, excellent service. The lamb was tender, flavorful and done perfectly. The soufflé dessert was an incredible compliment of flavors.

Lovely experience - great food. Starter and main were much better than starter. Nice to be in a gorgeous setting / room. Front out house was exceptional and made us feel at ease
