A rustic retreat amidst the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, The Wensleydale Heifer Leyburn serves seasonal British food that has earned it a place in the Good Food Guide. Serving a dedicated lobster menu, and winner of AA Seafood Pub of the Year, the restaurant specialises in using carefully sourced British produce to create simple but exquisitely presented dishes.

Prepared by a team of chefs who have worked in several different countries, the weekly changing menu is diverse, and is led by supreme seafood from the British Isles. From the grill, try the signature malt whisky and brown sugar marinated beef fillet, celeriac and truffle purée, and a choice of sauces including aged Roquefort and muscat cream. The seafood dishes are every bit as exciting, and include banana leaf-baked Scottish salmon, with crab and Thai peanut curry sauce. The Heifer’s Canadian lobster salad is enough to satisfy the hungriest of diners, featuring lobster, scallops, tiger prawns, crispy belly pork, smoked bacon, and a sweet maple syrup dressing. As well as a vegetarian menu, a range of dishes have been designed for gluten-free diners, including the Heifer’s famous fish and chips.

As well as a children’s menu, vegetarian and vegan menu, and a hearty Sunday lunch, The Wensleydale Heifer West Witton boasts a lengthy list of world wines and creative cocktails. The snug and bar offer the opportunity to enjoy a hand-picked whisky or local ale from the comfort of a cosy fireside chair, whilst the restaurant garden is open for al fresco dining in warmer weather.

Surrounded by stunning scenery, The Wensleydale Heifer in North Yorkshire sits between the idyllic towns of Leyburn and Hawes.

We ate here for mothers day and were very impressed with the food. It was all beautifully presented and tasted amazing. The only thing that I feel let our experience down was the particular staff on the day. We got the impression of a 'cant be bothered' attitude from the waitresses and felt like we were on a bit of a production line 'get them in and get them out'. Having paid £40 per person for a special mothers day menu we would have expected more from the staff- it doesn't take much to be friendly, especially on mothers day a special day.

My wife and I enjoyed an excellent dining experience at the WH. Every aspect of each course was simply superb. The preparation and detail of each dish was of the highest quality and the ingredients used were first class. Service from arrival to departure was professional, slick but friendly and not stuffy in the slightest. We opted for a beef salad and a duck confit as starter dishes and thoroughly enjoyed them. The quantities were perfectly balanced unlike some other restaurants where the starter is either small and negligible or conversely apt to impact too much on the appetite by being too large. Our starters were perfect in every way. The choice of main courses was varied but uncomplicated. We chose two lobster dishes, one of which was accompanied with a steak. I cannot emphasise enough just how delicious our chosen meals were. Every component part was cooked to perfection and each item there in, including each individual vegetable, had clearly been sourced with great care and consideration. This was probably the most satisfying dining experience my wife and I had shared in over three decades. From start to finish there was not one aspect of our experience that could have been bettered.

What a surprising place! From the look of the exterior we expected pub food with more emphasis on quantity than quality. How wrong we were. The food was excellent and very nicely presented. Lobster better and less pricey than most places and puddings to die for. The service was good and friendly. Our only criticism was the rather oddly decorated dining room, lacking in character compared to the rest of the place.

Surprised the snug was so quiet until I realised that you use your sophisticated booking system to help control the kitchen workload! Very friendly service, excellent food.
