Set on the bank of the River Thames, against the picturesque backdrop of Wolvercote, The Trout is an historic building which traces its roots to the 17th century. Now offering al fresco dining and serving modern British cuisine, this cosy, country pub and the riverbank it sits on have provided inspiration for literary gems such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Trout restaurant menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at The Trout bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Trout in Oxford is a 10-minute drive from Oxford Railway Station.

    Same as usual.
Excellent food, prompt and courteous staff.
The setting by the river is beautiful despite yesterday's heavy rain, even the peacock seemed fed up with the weather!

Party of 13. 10 very good meals. One (pork belly) totally unacceptable as all fat to the extent it resembled puff pastry. One (pizza) only arrived after two reminders and as the other diners were finishing. Pizza however was very good - just late. Overall a disappointing Three stars.
For the way waiting staff handled pork belly complaint - one star.
The topper for the special surprise cake was "lost". It was courierd back to our hotel 24hrs later having been found in a fridge. What use then? Absolutely no stars.

My overseas friend had been before and wanted another visit. Very friendly staff. We were left hanging at the end waiting to pay our bill. Also concerned to see people bringing their dogs into the restaurant area. Keep dogs out please. Fried fish was good but fish was a bit skimpy compared with nice crispy batter. Please drain off oil from fish by standing on paper for longer before serving. We enjoyed our visit and will be back again.

Great staff and the food was good, sadly the crab, prawn and chorizo linguine was missing the crab ?? but the worst area was the toilets - awfully smelly and very dirty - such a shame!

Slow service, further delay as we were showered with a tray of drinks splashing my handbag and contents with red wine, spoiled the enjoyment of our meal as we mopped up and glass was swept up.

Visited The Trout many times while working in Oxford and always been very good. However, this visit was not up to the usual standard. We were shown to our table. Booking was 1pm. It took ages before the waiter took our drinks order and had to get his attention. Then we noticed that another table who came in after us was attended to before us so was a while before we were able to order our starters and mains. We waited an unusual amount of time between the courses. We then wanted to order desert and had to get the waiters attention again. Then when the deserts were delivered only three came out and he said the other was on its way. Our companion said for us to continue as we had warm deserts but we had almost finished and his still had not been delivered. There were no waiters in the vicinity to get their attention and he had to go and find someone.

Not the normal standard for The Trout.

If this was my first visit I probably would hesitate in recommending to friends. However, as I know The Trout is better than this I would still pay them another visit.

We arrived at the restaurant a little early and were told to go to the bar. We sat down at our table at 8.15. It was my daughters 17th which I had mentioned in my email booking. This was not mentioned. We sat at the back of the restaurant, I think a conservatory type. I was in a dreadful draft that blew through the door and underneath. I sat throughout the meal in my coat. I did not want to make a fuss as my daughter's boyfriend was dining with us for the first time. We did not have a starter so just a main meal. We waited over 50 minutes for this to arrive. The table of 8 next to us got there starters at the same time and had only arrived at 8.50. When we came to pay the bill, the waitress was extremely curt with my husband about how he could leave the tip. We were very disappointed indeed. When we left the restaurant to walk through to the exit the rest of the restaurant seemed extremely warm.

Table for 4. 3 members had a good Meal. 1 member struggled to find anything gluten free for main meal and absolutely no desserts were gluten free. Asked for salad with no onions and was given tonnes of chopped spring onions! Not good
Another member asked for water and received it in a filthy glass covered in orange juice bits stuck to it.
