Set on the bank of the River Thames, against the picturesque backdrop of Wolvercote, The Trout is an historic building which traces its roots to the 17th century. Now offering al fresco dining and serving modern British cuisine, this cosy, country pub and the riverbank it sits on have provided inspiration for literary gems such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Trout restaurant menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at The Trout bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Trout in Oxford is a 10-minute drive from Oxford Railway Station.

Beautiful location - excellent service - popular venue - but food disappointing

We each had fish cakes. They were large and had lots of potato but not have much fish and were too bland.

Too many free animals in the terrace- a peacock was allowed to come very close to us during our lunch. And we had to feed many ducks as they where almost sitting on our lap.

Food was excellent and staff were friendly. Came in the evening but hope to be back to see how pretty it was by the river.

The food was good. Pretty sure it's the same menu at that of the lyttleton arms in hagley. However the quality was subpar to that of the lyttleton. The service was incredibly slow and we felt abandoned and ignored most of the time. The man (I think he said his name was Neil) at the front of house seemed drunk, and kept complaining about how busy it was.
Not great overall but luckily we are very tolerant people and still enjoyed our meal. Others might not be so forgiving.

We did have to wait half an hour for the table and were simply told to head into the bar, where there was nowhere to sit, while the previous people finished their meal. There was no effort to look after us or keep us updated while we waited - until we asked (more than once). Once the staff realized we were not too happy they made a big effort to repair good relations and gave us glasses of prosecco 'on the house', but it would have been better to have the table available at the booked time, or to have been keep informed while we waited. It was a shame we had to chase them up so much. We had a child with us who was getting tired and hungry! When it arrived, the food was very good indeed.
