Dating back to the 19th century, The Thatched House near Upminster boasts well-loved British pub cuisine in a wild countryside setting, near to the eye-catching Thames Chase Forest. Featuring a pretty al fresco beer garden and a cosy hearth-fire, The Thatched House has a more modern appearance, with clean, bold colours, sleek furniture and ornate mirrors.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Thatched House menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Thatched House ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

At just 4 minutes’ drive to central Upminster, The Thatched House is nestled in the Essex countryside.

Friendly helpful staff but appeared rushed off their feet. Definitely doing their best in the circumstances. Food took nearly an hour to arrive after ordering, but due to "a small fire" in the kitchen. Roast chicken dinner was okay but nothing special - vegetables rather sad and uninspiring. Seafood risotto had an overwhelming garlic flavouring that masked everything. Aftertaste was distinctly unpleasant. Dessert of frozen yoghurt was delicious however - simple and unfussy.

It felt quite chilly in the restaurant when we arrived, should have kept our jackets on a bit longer! The staff were very friendly and attentive although we thought there was a very long wait for our food to arrive. A few things weren't available on the menu which was a little disappointing.

The staff were polite, extremely hard working and friendly. They were rushed off their feet, but managed very well. The building inside needed a good dust. The wooden beams were full of cobwebs, but at floor level was okay. There were several famililies dining, but it wasn't noisy. The atmosphere was pleasant. However, my food was very concerning. I ordered a chicken ceasar salad. The chicken wasn't cooked inside. It was pink and bloody. I informed the waiter. He immediately acknowledge the problem and removed the dish. I was served with a replacement dish. Very nicely presented. However again, some pieces of the chicken were pink and bloody when you cut into it. Appalling! We paid and left.

Service was poor, menu was limited as ran out of many options, food was okay.

Very disappointed. I have eaten here many times but the menu had changed slightly and I chose fish finger sandwich. I left most of my meal on the plate. It was so dry and the type of bread used definitely did not work with the fish fingers, which were virtually all batter.

We often eat here for Sunday lunch and it has never disappointed us. The service is always good. The waiters/waitresses are always welcoming and helpful. The Sunday roast is good value for money and always very tasty. We enjoy eating here.

We went for Sunday lunch and the food was really good for the price. All of the vegetables were fresh, not frozen. The staff were friendly and efficient.
