Experience was fine once the booking was sorted out as the on line booking had not been received by the restaurant which was extremely embarassing. The restaurant were great about it making room for us but it was not the experience it should have been.

The Swan Hotel started life way back in 1777 and continues to draw diners to enjoy tasty British fare and fine ales. The airy interior is brightened with sunlight streaming through the large glass windows, and candle-lit tables and chunky wooden furniture bring in a cosy feel.

Specialising in trusty, home-cooked British recipes, The Swan menu is made up of time-honoured classics and inventive chef’s specials. The signature beef & ale pie is a creation from much-loved celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, while favourite world flavours include sizzling steak fajitas, or aubergine and roast beetroot curry. Gourmet sandwiches and jacket potatoes are served throughout the day, and guests can round things off with an indulgent crumble, cheesecake or sundae.

The drinks list at The Swan pub features carefully-chosen beers and international wines, and a lengthy list of soft drinks. Younger diners are not forgotten, with a varied menu for both lunch and dinner, and a mini roast served on Sundays.

A short drive from Jane Austen's House Museum, The Swan Hotel Alton is a 10-minute walk from Alton Rail Station.
