A gem of a restaurant with friendly and attentive staff, good food, an intimate and artistic decor and very good acoustics for conversation. Couldn't fault it!

Beautiful experience overall. Friendly efficient staff, good choice of main courses. Tiny criticisms might be it would be helpful to have one or two lighter starters and the cheeseboard, while fantastic, was a very substantial helping.

Generally, when my wife and I dine out in any type of restaurant something goes wrong, which makes us reluctant to dine out at all. All change! Our experience at The Stockbridge was total delight. The restaurant staff were very busy but we were nimbly received, offered a choice of table and soon seated with menu and the drinks list in hand. We chose a local beer - very good. The amuse bouche did just that very well. I had pigeon to start followed by venison both medium-rare. Wonderful dishes of food. Go and try them. My wife had partridge and duck (no game bird or fowl is safe from her in the season). She was fulsome in praise of the tastes and presentation. For dessert, we both selected the chocolate with chocolate plus chocolate. Again, total pleasure on a plate. The coffee was good, too.

In sum, an inspiring experience. There is excellence out there. Jane Walker and the Stockbridge team deserve high praise. We shall return.

Delicious meal and really good value. The smoked haddock risotto in particular was divine!

The restaurant is located in a very nice area of Edinburgh surrounded by a mixture of wine bars, restaurants, coffee shops and restaurants. As you go down the steps to the restaurant you can see that some care has been taken to ensure that the first impression the diner is greeted with is subtle sophisticated dinning experience. As you step through the door of the restaurant you are in the heart of the dinning room and are surround by tables to either side - the cloakroom area is further into the room behind an archway. The walls and ceiling of the room are painted black with the chairs being a light gold against white table clothes - this could be a very dim area but fortunately the lighting is just right and it creates a charming intimate ambiance. The servers are polite. informed on the dishes and attentive. The is a good selection of wines and cocktails and the servers are happy to make a cocktail to your own specific requirement if requested.

The menu offers a varied selection of dishes with a brief description of each dish. Upon making our choices the server returned with a selection of bread and appetizers. Both of which were good. My starter of pork with black pudding was presented well and the sauce complimented the dish. Unfortunately the rest of the dinner did not live up to the high expectations that had been set. My partner had steak (medium) which was not cooked to request, very grisly and the sauce completely overpowering. I had scallops with pancetta in a bisque sauce again the scallops were overcooked and the sauce far to strong for the dish.

This could have been an excellent dining experience, unfortunately, for us, is was ok at best. Will we be returning to this establishment - no as there are a lot of very good restaurants in the area where we would probably dine.
