We showed up early to our reservation but were seated right away and given the most attentive service. The food was delicious, the atmosphere cozy, but upscale, and our server (Roi) was great, checking on gluten-free menu items for one member of our party and always there when we needed him.

Inside a snug 17th-century building with crackling log fires and exposed beams, The St John's Chop House showcases the finest succulent steaks and chops alongside carefully chosen local ales and an extensive wine list.

The finest cuts of meat feature on the St John's Chop House menu, ranging from classics like sirloin, through to 10oz delmonico steak, or juicy pork t-bone, all served with signature coleslaw and other indulgent sides. There are Chop House sausages, confit duck leg, and seafood recipes like coley fillet with spiced crab cake. As well as light bites like haggis fritters with beetroot and whisky mayonnaise, there are also vegetarian delicacies such as vegetable and walnut bake wellington.

Indulgent desserts at The St John's Chop House Cambridge include elderflower and whiskey jelly with champagne sorbet, and the classic option of sticky toffee pudding. Local ales are championed, as well as British lager and cider, while the wine list focuses on the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France.

Also serving gluten-free, dairy-free and children's menus, The St John's Chop House is rich in British dining tradition, and sits 12 minutes' walk from Cambridge Rail Station.

Excellent, good value food (early-bird menu). Pickled Herring starter particularly good.
Service lets it down though. Too 'cold' and efficient. Also, background noise from staff at 6pm (as they think the restaurant has few customers it's ok to be loud).

Very good food . Venison (from specials board ) and lamb were delicious . Waiter suggested the venison best served medium rare , but I asked for it to be cooked medium and it was beautifully cooked . Lovely herby mash and served with broccoli and root vegetable crisps . Jus was very tasty , if I was to be picky I would say a little bit more jus would have been welcome towards the end of the meal . My son had the lamb and that was lovely . The rib eye steak was very nice and cooked as requested , although the peppercorn sauce was too thick and too many peppercorns . Cotes du rousillon wine complemented our meal very well and we rounded off our meal with a sticky toffee pudding which was lovely and moist and plenty of sauce and the burnt cream was very nice too

We had a lovely evening. The welcome was friendly and there was so much attention to detail from the staff. When we asked for advice on wines we got explanations and suggestions that really complimented our food. The food was excellent and bought to the table at a pace that allowed a little well needed breathing space before courses.
Wonderful meal, wonderful night, wonderful restaurant.

Always entertained by Blackadder in lavatories. Otherwise, excellent food and service.
