Inside a snug 17th-century building with crackling log fires and exposed beams, The St John's Chop House showcases the finest succulent steaks and chops alongside carefully chosen local ales and an extensive wine list.

The finest cuts of meat feature on the St John's Chop House menu, ranging from classics like sirloin, through to 10oz delmonico steak, or juicy pork t-bone, all served with signature coleslaw and other indulgent sides. There are Chop House sausages, confit duck leg, and seafood recipes like coley fillet with spiced crab cake. As well as light bites like haggis fritters with beetroot and whisky mayonnaise, there are also vegetarian delicacies such as vegetable and walnut bake wellington.

Indulgent desserts at The St John's Chop House Cambridge include elderflower and whiskey jelly with champagne sorbet, and the classic option of sticky toffee pudding. Local ales are championed, as well as British lager and cider, while the wine list focuses on the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France.

Also serving gluten-free, dairy-free and children's menus, The St John's Chop House is rich in British dining tradition, and sits 12 minutes' walk from Cambridge Rail Station.

The food is very nicely done here, and the restaurant itself has a pleasant feel, but the menu is a little limited. If you want an excellent roast/steak then it is the place to be, and we like several of the starters (tried a few over the last couple of visits). Some more game would be great (and the beef wellington which has gone was what we kept coming back for!).

My husband and I were in the area and decided to do a last minute restaurant booking. St John's Chop House was only 5 minutes away and it looked cool. When we got there, we loved the decor, the low ceilings and wooden beams and the staff were super friendly.

I'm lactose intolerant and they had a separate Dairy-free menu for me. I wanted something that wasn't on my menu, and the chef was happy to do this for me without a fuss, which was great. We tried red carrot for the first time ever! I didn't even know they existed. This is now a new favourite. Food was lovely, and the waitress even brought us free samples of the sorbet before we decided on flavour. Not something we asked for, just something they did because they are a friendly staff.

The dairy-free Espresso Martini is absolutely amazing! A couple of sips and I was all giddy. I would definitely recommend it.

Even the toilet experience was amazing! They had a Blackadder sketch playing whilst you did your business. I thought this was quite funny.. never experienced that before. But what I also liked was that they had some extra toiletries in a basket on the side that you could use (sanitary towels, tampons, deodorant and anti-bac).

The only down side to our day was that we parked in the carpark across the road, and we didn't realise that you have to pay for parking on a Sunday. So we ended up with a fine which made our Sunday lunch outing quite pricey. This however didn't spoil our experience at the restaurant, and we would come back if we're ever in Cambridge again.

Highly recommended - just check the parking restrictions thoroughly!

Three of us ordered Sunday roasts which were excellent. Pork was great and lamb was even better, which is quite rare to find in restaurant roasts. However my wife ordered the fish (sole) which was very disappointing. The first one had very salty sauce which was made worse with capers and samphire. We complained and the second one came very plain with no seasoning and the sauce was in a separate jug, however the sauce was very watery. So they went the far extreme instead of fixing the sauce. At this point she has lost her appetite just wanted to leave. Her mother's day is experience is dented because of this. Our waiter was amazing throughout and very empathetic and helpful - so kudos to him. I suppose our lesson is not to order fish in a chop house.

Exceptional meal as per normal. Friendly staff and Hugh quality food. Oiled on a Saturday, so parking was a struggle, but then you expect that in a city on a Saturday.

Food was absolutely delicious, we all had roast beef for main course but it was cold. I think it didn't help because it was served on cold plates with cold gravy, disappointing as we had taken our mum out for Mother's Day, starter and pudding was great.
