I like the ambience of this pub, the staff are very friendly. The lunchtime menu is varied, but over the last two visits I have been made aware of items that were not 'on' the menu for that day.

Refreshing guests with food and drink since the mid-1800s, The Shy Horse serves well-loved British pub cuisine in a countryside setting. With a pretty beer garden for al fresco dining in warmer climes, and a cosy hearth-fire for winter, The Shy Horse also values its classic and eye-catching whitewash stone and red slate exterior.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Shy Horse menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Shy Horse ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

Close to Chessington World of Adventure, The Shy Horse is just 4 minutes’ drive from the town of Chessington.

Mixed experience on our second visit. The Sunday roast was great, but only turkey left by early evening. The chicken pie was very dry and over baked but the kids meals went down very well and were a little different from the usual. Service was friendly. The pub and garden are both pretty but the toilets were unmentionable...
It is good value and local so I would return but might avoid a Sunday?

I have been going to the Shy Horse for over 10 years and until yesterday, never had any complaints. Yesterday was not good. It was very busy as would be expected on Mother's day. There did not appear to be enough staff to cope with the people in the restaurant, although not all tables were full.
The service was sluggish to say the least, although our waiter was rushing around to do his best to serve people.
We eventually got our starters and they were lovely, but it was a long time before we got our main courses. When they arrived, the vegetables were very overcooked: the cabbage and broccoli could only be described as mush, and the carrots had been boiled or steamed so long they were tasteless. My lamb on the other hand was still bleating; it poured blood all over the plate when I cut into it. I had to send it back. Second time round it was better, but quite tough in places.
The yorkshire pudding was so crisp it shattered when my son put his fork in it.
We were going to have dessert and coffee, but we decided that as my sons and I had over an hour's drive to get home, we couldn't afford the extra 40 minutes we anticipated it would take to get it.
I would like to assure you that our waiter was not to blame for any of the problems; in fact he was clearly embarrassed that it had taken so long to serve us as he refused to take a tip because it had taken so long to serve us.
Will I return to the Shy horse? Maybe. I would like to think that I visited on a bad day. Would I recommend it to others? Probably not until I have been again and had a far more positive experience. That may be sometime in the distant future as it is a long way to drive from Eastbourne to be disappointed.

great table and location near fire. great hospitality. good food. attentive personnel. (waited on by assistant manager, who showed true dedication and pride in his work). lamb was excellent. superbly cooked to perfection, tender, succulent and pink. smoked salmon starter beautiful. I would recommend these. the chocolate duo desert was heavenly and the cheese boards served a good selection of freshly cut cheeses.

All the adults in our party enjoyed their meals however I did not find the restaurant very child friendly. I had requested a high chair and had to find one myself. The children's menu was not suitable for my 2 yr old at all....sirloin steak!. And then the 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream came in a glass bigger than my son! I would dine here again but not with children which is a shame as it was a fathers day treat for the family.
