Set in the rural wheat fields of the Forward Green village in Ipswich, The Shepherd & Dog is an independent British gastro-pub. Combining a bar, restaurant and lounge space, The Shepherd & Dog serves refined British cuisine in conjunction with local Suffolk suppliers.

Each dish on The Shepherd & Dog menu is crafted around 2 complementary ingredients. So, Suffolk lamb loin is paired with salsify purée, and served with slow-roast vegetables, while tender pan-fried pork belly and pork croquettes partner juicy roast pear. The theme continues through desserts, with a caramelised apple and fennel combination, and coffee ice cream with chestnut mousse in filo pastry.

There’s also a simple yet tasty bar menu of classic favourites, like 21 day-aged steak with horseradish cream, and a half lobster with garlic butter. A snug seating area at rustic country pub, The Shepherd & Dog, allows guests a relaxed setting in which to enjoy a selection of freshly-brewed teas and coffees alongside delicate homemade cakes.

The Shepherd & Dog is just outside of Stowmarket, a short drive from the A14.

We have been to this restaurant a few times now and it never fails to serve up excellent meals and a service level that is just right.
As a result of my work I have travelled a lot, but the steak I was served last night was the very best I have eaten for a very long time. The rest of the meal was equally impressive, and the service was friendly and knowledgeable without being instrusive. The atmosphere is friendly and in no way pretentious, and yet the meal could match most of the 'top' restaurants in London.

One of the problems with writing such a good review is that it becomes too busy but this is a business that deserves to do well.

I just love eating here. The staff are welcoming and friendly upon arrival. They have an excellent drinks menu including some amazing cocktails.
The food is just out of this world, the skill which the chef has for both taste and presentation is just perfect.
They do some amazing set menu offers as well lunch time 3 course for £15.00 , trust me you won't find better anywhere local.
This is not your normal pub grub, it is restaurant food in a friendly and comfortable setting, served by passionate team who know about customer service.
If you haven't been , you really don't know what you are missing.

An excellent restaurant located in the Suffolk country side. Warm friendly welcome and atmosphere. Staff helpful, relaxed and friendly. The meal was well prepared and cooked with lovely flavours; shared starter of white crab meat and cauliflower, main courses of rump of lamb and sole and shared desert of baked apple in doughnut with custard. The glass of recommended wine for the main course was excellent. Nothing more to add. When next in the area we’ll certainly book again.

The breads and olives given were excellent, so much so that we took a couple of slices home to eat later!!
The choice was also very good and the food served and presented very well, some unusual additions to some vegetables made the meals even more interesting. Thanks also for the extra potatoes as they are always the best for me.
