Edinburgh’s oldest surviving watering hole, The Sheep Heid, is a restored village pub & restaurant which is said to have been a favourite among monarchs & poets in the past. With a beer garden offering al fresco dining in warm weather, and rustic interiors including high-backed leather armchairs by crackling log-fires, this gastro pub serves a seasonal menu of uncomplicated British food.

Sourcing ingredients from trusted local suppliers, The Sheep Heid Inn menu features wholesome recipes based around the garden, land and sea. Sample hand-pressed burgers, beef & ale pie with cardamom carrots, or sea bass with potato gnocchi, while old-school puddings include warming crumbles, custard-lathered sponges and decadent brownies. Not forgetting younger diners, a kids’ menu includes miniature versions of British classics.

A partnership with the celebrated Rothschild wine merchants means The Sheep Heid cellar is stocked full with an eclectic list of world wines, while indulgent wine flights allow guests to sample a variety of bins. Seasonal beers and barrel-kept ales also feature, as well as thirst-quenching cocktails and rich coffees.

The Sheep Heid in Edinburgh is a 7-minute drive from Brunstane Rail Station.

Staff were very nice. Enjoyed camembert sharing starter. The chicken burger was excellent. Steak was very tasty. Would go again.

Service was a little slow, however very friendly. We felt we arrived after a very busy lunch service and the staff appeared "frazzled" to say the least.
We booked on for the Sunday roast however when we arrived we were told there was no roast left.
I have dined here before and although I enjoyed both meals I would say the food is very average. The establishment is cozy, and our nearest pub, I probably wouldn't got out my way to dine here. Nice place for a nice pint after a dog walk and not much more.

Cosy traditional pub on the far side of Arthur's Seat. Decent beer selection, delicious starters, mains (roast) decent but let down by shockingly bad (uncooked in the middle) roast potatoes, and no discount offered after drawing this to staff's attention. A shame this tarnished an otherwise positive Sunday lunch :(

Really enjoyed it, improvement on previous visits. At last fulfilling it's potential. One of my favourite places to have a drink. And now a meal.

Staff were attentive, pleasant and helpful however the food was mixed. Lamb kofta starter was delicious while salt and pepper squid was distinctly average. Sweet potato fries, requested as a starter, were also tasty. For main, lamb rump with asparagus and chorizo was delicious and perfectly cooked but the dauphinoise potato accompaniment was bland and, even worse, raw! Rib eye steak cooked as requested, rare, but it tasted of the grill, which perhaps had not been cleaned. Overall, because of the prices and mixed standards of cooking, I would not hurry back. Tuesday night and it was quiet so rating for ambience reflects this.
