Edinburgh’s oldest surviving watering hole, The Sheep Heid, is a restored village pub & restaurant which is said to have been a favourite among monarchs & poets in the past. With a beer garden offering al fresco dining in warm weather, and rustic interiors including high-backed leather armchairs by crackling log-fires, this gastro pub serves a seasonal menu of uncomplicated British food.

Sourcing ingredients from trusted local suppliers, The Sheep Heid Inn menu features wholesome recipes based around the garden, land and sea. Sample hand-pressed burgers, beef & ale pie with cardamom carrots, or sea bass with potato gnocchi, while old-school puddings include warming crumbles, custard-lathered sponges and decadent brownies. Not forgetting younger diners, a kids’ menu includes miniature versions of British classics.

A partnership with the celebrated Rothschild wine merchants means The Sheep Heid cellar is stocked full with an eclectic list of world wines, while indulgent wine flights allow guests to sample a variety of bins. Seasonal beers and barrel-kept ales also feature, as well as thirst-quenching cocktails and rich coffees.

The Sheep Heid in Edinburgh is a 7-minute drive from Brunstane Rail Station.

A party of 13 well catered for and good communication beforehand - thank you, Liam.
Food, as always, first class with a great selection of beers and wines.
Had to contact the Sheep Heid as the bookatable website only allows for a maximum of 8 people to finalise the booking.

Staff lovely, very attentive and friendly. Service excellent. Unfortunately, and it pains me to say this but food was disappointing. Cod goujons over cooked, fish totally dried out . The soup was inedible swamped with pepper, the steak pie was freezing in the middle. Lamb rump consisted of two one inch cubes of gristle. Couldn't eat it. It was my wife's birthday so we were disappointed with this visit. Have been many times before and it's always been great. Must have been a serious off day in the kitchen. Such a shame as everything else is lovely.

Service and ambience were reasonable. My food was very disappointing - the seafood mix in a pot was tasteless and swimming in liquid, and the green vegetable with my indifferent steak pie was unseasoned

Absolutely loved it here. We ate here twice during our stay and it was definitely a highlight. My husband enjoyed everything he tried and I am newly obsessed with the fried halloumi. Honest. I could eat that every day and die very happy. We loved the ambiance and the staff were all excellent.

Last time we were here it was new year, and neither service and food were very good. That time of year is not a good time to judge restaurants, so we were happy to return last night. Inside the pub is lovely, we had a great seat in the bar area. Food arrived quickly. I had a the hallumi covered in batter and chips (like a veggie fish and chips). It was very good. Partner had steak, with he said was great. Son had a really generous portion of burge and chips (kids menu is really good ... There are options without chips!). Lots of good beers to choose from.
