Proudly boasting 2 AA Rosettes for excellence, The Salty Monk restaurant is hidden in the beautiful Devon countryside, as part of an award-winning Bed & Breakfast. Utilising local produce, it serves fine British cuisine, and was even awarded ‘Best Coastal Cream Tea in Devon’.
The award-winning menu of The Salty Monk offers lines for weddings and breakfast, complemented by a wine list of both well-known and unearthed-gem bottles. Such delicious dishes include roast fillet of beef sliced on to wild garlic pasta ribbons, with mustard cream sauce, and layered salmon, sole and scallop mousse garnished with seared scallops and saffron foam.
Electing a regal dusty pink colour, The Salty Monk interior is elegant and grand, from the rustic sideboard to the ornate gold-framed mirror. It even features the work of renowned local artist Ben Hughes, aiding the class of the restaurant, and has a secluded private dining room.
With views over the River Sid, and only 5 minutes’ drive to the sea at Sidmouth, The Salty Monk is the ideal country restaurant in Devon.

This truly is one great food experience. Well presented, taste combinations that are a must for every diner. We have dined at many restaurants but this is unlike any other! We had lunch, and upon finishing, immediately made reservations for dinner later in the week. You will not be disappointed. Expensive but well worth it. Cannot think of any other restaurants that have the quality of food/tastes in this nor nearby counties. The ambience is very inviting, and once within the restaurant one will forget that you are situated next to a busy road. Amazing result when one considers its' location.

We had a great welcome, we only went for afternoon tea, however we were treated like VIP's! The building and interior is a very high standard, along with the facilties. Our little family was accommodated so thought fully. The food was exceptional, this was the second time we have been. I think it impossible to only ever visit once!

Our visit to the Salty Monk restaurant was excellent, from the warm, welcoming and wonderfully comfortable reception to the efficient and friendly settling up and leaving. The ambience and decor throughout is well considered combining style and comfort in good proportion. The two members of staff on duty were attentive, but not overly so; knowledgeable, affable and highly professional without austerity. The menu was interesting and provided a good range of choice across each course; the wine list well conceived and balanced. The sweet potato and parmesan fritter amuse bouche was delectable; the homemade bread, particularly a mini loaf flavoured with turmeric was exceptional; our starters - smoked fish platter and chicken terrine - were very good and presented beautifully; main courses of steak (with a shin ravioli) and duck in a tartlet with belly pork and accompanying roasted vegetables hit the mark too. Desserts of orange mousse and a yoghurt and honey baked Alaska were fabulous and coffee with homemade sweets, a very good way to complete an altogether remarkable dining experience. Stand out elements were the fritters, the home smoked fish (who knew pollack could taste that good!), the texture of the pastry in the tart, the honeycomb addition to the Alaska and those very moreish yellow loaves! Could anything have been improved? Not really. Perhaps the chicken terrine could have been a little more flavoursome and I would have preferred a greater proportion of duck to belly pork on my main course, but these are minor points and didn't distract from our experience, nor our hope to visit again very soon.

Wonderful food and visual presentation excellent as usual. You are our "go to" restaurant for 5 star value. Well done to all and thank for the little surprise for our daughter's birthday meal!
The Monday development apprentice scheme is a brilliant idea for budding chefs.

As on our previous visits, the welcome was warm and cheerful. The menu was imaginative, the food well presented, and the service excellent. It's a bit pricey, but as an eating experience, it's one of the best in East Devon in our opinion.
