Housed in a restored Georgian building opposite Edinburgh University’s main halls of residence, The Salisbury Arms is a pub & restaurant with a beer garden for sun-soaked dining in the warmer months. With vaulted ceilings, cream-coloured walls & deep sofas & armchairs by the fireplace, it is a homely hideaway serving hearty British cuisine.
Sourcing ingredients from trusted local suppliers, The Salisbury Arms menu features wholesome recipes based around the garden, land and sea. Sample hand-pressed burgers, beef & ale pie with cardamom carrots, or sea bass with potato gnocchi, while old-school puddings include warming crumbles, custard-lathered sponges and decadent brownies. Not forgetting younger diners, a kids’ menu includes miniature versions of British classics.
A partnership with the celebrated Rothschild wine merchants means The Salisbury Arms cellar is stocked full with an eclectic list of world wines, while indulgent wine flights allow guests to sample a variety of bins. Seasonal beers and barrel-kept ales also feature, as well as thirst-quenching cocktails and rich coffees.
The Salisbury Arms in Edinburgh is a 5-minute drive from Edinburgh Rail Station.

Nice food relatively slow service on a busy Sunday

Food mediocre. Linguine seafood dishes had obviously been kept under heating elements prior to serving and were rather dry.

The food here is fantastic and has been since it opened! However the very poor service is starting to make me wonder whether it is worth the ridiculously long wait, and unfriendly, unprofessional service. The service used to be great here too, however over the last year it has really gotten worse and worse each time I have been.
The staff don't make any effort to make you feel welcome, and they actively avoid eye contact. No apologies when forgetting drinks orders and certainly didn't check if everything was ok at any point. Very disappointing. I keep going to the Salisbury arms because I am pretty confident that the food really is such a great standard.
But the service makes the whole experience feel far too expensive. I warned my friends that the service is slow, and I hoped that you would prove me wrong. But you didn't.
The staff were having their lunch on the table next to us while we were there and they got their food much faster than we did. I'm all for staff having a break but I don't feel that they should be occupying a table right next to paying customers. While customers are still waiting from someone to take our order and bring the drinks they have forgotten. Or just to make eye contact so that we can ask for the forgotten drinks because we are so thirsty after a walk up the crags. Unprofessional and disappointing.
If it wasn't for the beautiful food then we would have been very, very irritated about the experience.
But like I said. Food is delicious.

Very nice big house with own parking. And very nice interior decor. And friendly staff. BUT the food was mediocre. We ordered fish and chips and a winter vegetable tart. The fish was good, but the chips were pale and tasteless. The winter tart was tasty but lukewarm and missing some garnishing. The apple and blackberry crumble was very nicely presented in a little pan but the blackberries were clearly jam!

The restaurant is warm, friendly and welcoming. The staff are lovely and provide a great service.I have been there 4 times and every dish i have ordered is delicious especially the fillet steak...cooked perfectly! The drinks menu has a really good choice too.
They have a nice patio area where you can sit and eat al fresco which is so nice.

I have eaten here twice before and have been very pleased the whole experience. However took friends there yesterday and was very embarrassed. The waiting staff were obviously busy and rushed but came across as rude. Having said the kitchen was very busy and out food could take up to 40 mins I asked for bread for the kids - still waiting. My order was totally wrong - gammon and eggs instead of ham and pineapple pizza!? A kids pizza was ineadable. They brought our deserts with no cutlery and had to wait a while on the hot drinks. Was so disappointed.
