Dating back to the 18th century, The Running Mare near Chelmsford has country views and lovely gardens from which to enjoy them. Offering well-loved British pub food, the pub has an open and light atmosphere, with large, old-fashioned windows, and a simple interior design. Boasting this simplicity are rustic features such as a warming hearth, Chesterfield armchairs and charming candles.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Running Mare menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Running Mare ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

While in the tranquil countryside, The Running Mare is but 6 minutes’ drive from Chelmsford.

Food is not as good as it used to be

This venue has a very good atmosphere and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The only criticism I have is that I ordered Scampi and Chips but the portion was a bit small - there were only 8 very small pieces of scampi. I did query this with the waitress and they brought me two more pieces.

A nice pub, I had the the sirloin steak, which passes as OK. I asked for it to be cooked medium, but it was certainly more rare than medium, abit too fatty. My husband had the fillet, he said it was lovely. I would return but would not order the steak again.

Visited last on 26.7.15 - Been visiting the Runnung Mare for decades either as a couple, as a family, with extended family and with friends no matter if the party is small or large it never lets us down - food is good and value for money and service tip top. It is also child friendly - Our Grandson has been going there regularly since he was six months old, he us now nearly 11, and he calls it our restaurant and always asks to go there when he stays over. Do not let the fact it is child friendly put you off going as the childrens are few and have always been well behaved. The outside garden is also good when the weather is nice.

The pub has plenty of character. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was OK for the money, my 'gourmet' chips (£1 extra) just seemed to be normal chips though.
