On the edge of the protected Sherradspark Wood and within reach of Welwyn Garden City centre, The Red Lion – Welwyn is a homey gastro pub. Though spacious, its fireplaces, cushioned wicker chairs, exposed brick wall accents and soft armchairs, give it the air of a cosy country-style pub.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Red Lion - Welwyn menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar at The Red Lion - Welwyn restaurant showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at the bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Red Lion - Welwyn in Hertfordshire is a 7-minute drive from Welwyn Garden City Railway Station.

We go to this restaurant regularly. Yesterday evening's meal was very good. Excellent choice of menu. The highlight for my husband was the brilliant starter of portobello mushrooms en brioche.
The staff are super friendly and helpful

My sister and I dined here on the 4th August for lunch. We had a salad and pasta and it was presented beautifully and tasted equally as good. We have been here a number of times and the food has always been good particularly for vegetarians and the staff very friendly.

The overall experience was good. Service and management good. The food was good - maybe a bit more elegant Pub than Michelin Star restaurant so it was hard to determine just what market they are addressing. A bit expensive for a family treat but not quite up to entertaining an important client. The food was good although I didnt like the crispy crumb squid. The Sea Bass was Ok but a touch overdone - contrasting with the mash (out of a packet?) which was underdone. The crabs had gone on strike so I was offered Crayfish instead - which probably would have been OK - had I been able to find them - but it was pleasant. The raspberry creme brulee to share was excellent however.
The table had an unpleasant feel of having been wiped over with a damp dishrag by a disgruntled ex employee. I also disliked the wicker chairs and squidgy squabs - quite the most uncomfortable seats I have sat on for a long time. It is OK to go for uniformity, but people are not the same. Some a tall, some are short, some are old and stiff like me and need a high seat, some need an armchair...either a selection, alternatives or just go and buy a job lot at an auction might just add a bit of character, which was a bit lacking - unless you really are going for the 'high school on a picnic' look. There was also a load of rubbish at the bottom of the stairs (?) from the kitchen. This should be removed for health and safety at the very least, but it looked pretty disgusting and one wonders where it had been to acquire its somewhat dubious patina?
