I eat quite a lot both at Dukes Head and Red Lion really like the menu, my favourite is the battered halloumi,it's just a bit different but it's all good. Don't think I've had a meal that I didn't like, also staff are nice and friendly in both.

Housed in an old coaching inn dating back to 1540, and retaining its original wooden beams, The Red Lion – Handcross is a refurbished contemporary pub serving Mediterranean-influenced British food. Warmed by log fires, the bar & restaurant features fur-lined chairs, marble-topped tables & several many-paned windows letting in plenty of natural light.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Red Lion menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include king prawn, crab and chorizo linguine, or spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at The Red Lion bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Red Lion Haywards Heath is an 8-minute drive from Balcombe Rail Station.

Excellent food and excellent waiter service - just disappointed there was no specials board.

The food was good, the service was very slow and not interactive ( not a great deal of checking were we ok) waited an hour before main course arrived ( only one of four had a starter but feel that this could have been managed better) then another hour before the dessert. Didn't bother with coffe as felt sat long enough. There were at least five tables not being used so wonder what would happen if full.
Had had a fabulous meal there two weeks earlier, which is why we were there, but in comparison with the first time it fell far short of expectations. The green veg was lukewarm and not as well presented, ( normally in small containers), as before although potatoes were in a pot, equally lukewarm) I thought they had run out of dishes. It is a pity because I have already been enthusiastic to some friends and will now have to modify my commendation. The dessert was lovely.
