Overseen by twin brothers Alex and Oliver Burnside, The Plough & Sail offers a modern British menu with eclectic world influences. This sensitively restored, country farmhouse-style hideaway features a spacious restaurant and cosy bar.

A tempting range of menus at The Plough & Sail feature dishes from local suppliers, while cellar is stocked full with world wines and ales from local breweries. Highlights include oysters with shallot vinegar, seasonal fish pie served with a local mixed leaf salad, and duck breast with fondant potato, braised red cabbage, plum tartlet & jus.

The tempting dessert menu features classic creme brulee with a ginger flapjack & poached apricots. In summer, the courtyard at the back is the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday.

Great choice and wonderful presentation. Fabulous steak. Could not fault it. A chef who knows how to do his job brilliantly! All staff very personable.

I like the Plough and Sail very much and my food was delicious but my friend's Duck Confit was disappointing, overcooked until a bit dry and served with a rich sauce jus that is not required with a confit. We finished with coffee. Two espressos and a decaffeinated espresso but the two ordinary ones were just "small americanos" the third one was good.

Friendly service and a good menu, overall a high standard normally that slipped a little this time.

Excellent Sunday roast - three different requests (rare, medium & well done) were each perfectly achieved and with a quality (matched by quantity) of beef that was the best any of us have had out for a long time. Roast potatoes slightly underdone for my taste, but st least that saved room for a lovely selection of ice creams to finish.

The food was lovely however the duck was slightly dry but nothing to worry about and the peppercorn sauce was more like gravy

Limited menu - different to what was on the website, but we were able to order 2 dishes that weren't on the Sunday evening menu. 2 lots of cod and chips - the worst 2 pieces of cod we have ever had. Very grey and not quite cooked in the middle. 2 burgers and chips - again extremely disappointing. Both dishes very greasy. Also ordered the camambert starter, which was the only redeeming part of the meal.

Quick friendly service. Food OK. Very stingy with the ice in drinks. Sun through side window very uncomfortable, a blind would have been good.

Overall very good: food excellent. We chose to sit outside, where there was not service at the table, but orders to be placed at the bar. This worked reasonably well, but as the bar was busy, ordering took some time. It also seemed that service to the outside area was not as well treated as that inside, so the waits between courses were longer, and this slightly spoiled the meal, given that we were going to a following concert (we arrived at 1800 for a concert at 1930, so there should have been adequate time).

In short, very busy, had to request service at every stage of the visit and due to staff being all over the place didn't have time to order a desert. When we paid the bill we had also been overcharged. On a more practical front the menu's were tatty and the dining chairs were uncomfortable - I felt like I was sitting on a toilet. In essence the restaurant felt a little like a well established fast food venue. The food was no more than fine and £14.00 for some breadcrumbed Halloumi and coucous definitely seemed a tad over priced. All in all a disappointing experience.
