With stunning riverside views and a large beer garden with a crackling fire pit for al fresco dining, The Plough – Fen Ditton is housed in a restored paper mill and coaching inn whose history dates back hundreds of years. With chunky wooden tables, plenty of armchairs & fireplaces, the pub is a rustic hideaway serving modern British cuisine.

Sourcing ingredients from trusted local suppliers, The Plough menu features wholesome recipes based around the garden, land and sea. Sample hand-pressed burgers, beef & ale pie with cardamom carrots, or sea bass with potato gnocchi, while old-school puddings include warming crumbles, custard-lathered sponges and decadent brownies. Not forgetting younger diners, a kids’ menu includes miniature versions of British classics.

A partnership with the celebrated Rothschild wine merchants means The Plough – Fen Ditton cellar is stocked full with an eclectic list of world wines, while indulgent wine flights allow guests to sample a variety of bins. Seasonal beers and barrel-kept ales also feature, as well as thirst-quenching cocktails and rich coffees.

The Plough in Fen Ditton is a 12-minute drive from Cambridge Rail Station.

We were a little disappointed with the food side of our experience. We hadn't visited this venue for many years so thought we would refresh our memory. We had the chicken and a British burger with additional blue cheese and a flat mushroom, The chicken was overcooked and the burger was tasty but a distinct lack of mushroom and cheese. The location is everything here, especially on a summer day but we felt the cooking could improve and a better menu choice. We did notice the cost of a large glass of red wine at £9+ was a little eye watering too.

A pity the choice of food was limited because of problems in the kitchen but what we did have - cod and chips, dessert platter was tasty and well presented. Service eas efficient as well.

Best restaurant features were the staff who couldn't do enough to make your experience a good one. I went with my mum as it was my birthday. My mum had the salmon & I ordered the rump steak. Mum's dinner was fine. Unfortunately my steak was initially not cooked to my request. It was returned & cooked further. However when received it had a awful taste. Mum tried it too & agreed. Not sure what it was but tested like off cheese or that horrible false parmesan. Went completely off my meal & felt upset that mum then didn't finish hers. The staff were really good they offered to cook me another meal but I was put off. They obviously took the steak off the bill and gave me a complimentary bottle of wine. Unfortunately I don't drink but mum accepted it on my behalf. I will not return not necessarily because of the experience but I found the menu limited for my taste. Unfortunately I was very upset as it spoilt my birthday experience with my mum.

The staff was helpful.. waiting time for courses was very long and they was running out of items of food which was on the menu...
The staff was helpful and apologised and never charged for our deserts as an apology which was nice of them...

The Restaurant was very cold in the area where we were seated which meant my companion had to wear her jacket throughout the meal. Initial service was good but deteriorated. Main courses were fine with the exception of a hot salad which was tasteless. After waiting some time for the dessert menu's we ordered two mini deserts with coffees and an ice cream. The coffee's arrived after five minutes and were drunk with no sign of the desserts. After twenty minutes we gave up waiting and asked for the bill. The restaurant was not busy but the staff were preoccupied with setting up tables and a marquee for the evening meals and neglected the customers they already had.

Staff very helpful and attentive, food delicious, reasonably priced, and beautifully presented. But, O the noise! Music too loud, other diners too near, so couldn't have a private conversation without shouting. Such a shame, it took the edge of a very pleasurable lunch.

The restaurant looked beautiful. Our food was amazing. All three courses were enjoyed by all in our party of four. The service was faultless.

Great experience as always - excellent attention to detail in the food presentation and to us as customers. Love coming back here. My friend was visiting from Australia for 2 weeks and this was our first choice - in fact it's so good she's taking her family next week.
