Since Nicholson’s pubs were first established in 1873, these traditional British inns have become synonymous with warm hospitality, hearty pub food and a speciality range of ales. As well as always featuring British pub classics like beer-battered fish & chips and gammon & eggs, The Old Contemptibles menu is complemented by a rotating selection of pie, sausage & chop and fish specials for each season.

The Old Contemptibles bar is always stocked with exquisite gins, warming whiskies and fine wines to pair with favourite meals, and there’s always a superb range of seasonal and regional real ales on offer. A constant at the bar is the St Austell-brewed Nicholson’s Pale Ale, made with Cornish Maris Otter malts, and a hand-picked blend of English hops.

This historic city centre pub has plenty of character. The Dining area is very comfortable with interesting old photos and history of the pub. Warm welcome on arrival and great service throughout. Good knowledge of Coeliac Disease and the need to be gluten free option - no problem with choice. Food arrived in good time and waiter made sure our glasses were always full. Overall, first class experience.

Very good pub food, plenty of it and it was piping hot - great friendly service - lovely small private dinning area at the back of pub if you book - which is perfect as this place is very popular as a drinking pub. Good location not too far away from the train station and a taxi rank and a few minutes walk from the main shopping centre.
