Inspired by its world-famous setting of the National Gallery, The National Café serves classic British and modern European food in timelessly elegant surroundings. Passionate about British produce, ingredients are carefully sourced.

The National Café menu features rich flavour combinations including starters of Capicola, sweet figs, ricotta and Wissey honey, and a smoked duck salad with green beans, chicory, honey mustard and peanuts. Main dishes are equally appealing, and include crab linguini with fennel, chilli and gremolata, Truffle omelette with wild mushrooms, Comte and butter leaf lettuce, and the signature burger which includes maple bacon, gruyere and Portobello mushrooms.

Desserts are an indulgent affair, and include banana split with dulche de leche, chocolate ice cream and Oreo crumble, and Italian affogato with gingerbread biscotti. Bar snacks, wines and cocktails can also be enjoyed at The National Café London.

The National Café at The National Gallery is just seconds from Trafalgar Square, and is a 2-minute walk from Charing Cross Train Station.

Staff were OK however there was an overwhelming sanitiser smell (the kind you get from portaloos) which stung my eyes. We were moved to a different table and the smell was marginally better. For my main I had the spaghetti with clams and there were small pieces of broken clamshells in it. I had a moment of panic when there was a crunch in a mouthful of spaghetti and I thought I'd chipped a tooth. This put me off the meal. My companion had the veal burger which was dry, hard and inedible. We told the staff who said they'd inform the chef but overall not a good dinner experience.

Excellent location and decent service. Food (both vegetarian dishes) bland and expensive ( 2 mains, 2 glasses of wine, 2 teas - £49). New decor and general atmosphere not a patch on the original.

Smart new decor with well priced pre theatre menu- perfect vegetables- rather oily Cornish fish pie- would choose differently next time. Friendly staff easy

The most comfortable and enjoyable meal I have had in London for years : excellent food, superb service and spacious surroundings. Actually I want to eat there every day . It was just amazing, after many meals in crowded, noisy and overpriced restaurants to find a place which was the opposite of all these things.

Very pleasant, good value meal with an especially excellent half bottle of Muscadet. Amiable if slightly slow service - but we were in no hurry. Fantastic location in a beautiful room just off Trafalgar Square.

    Well presented and tasty food.
Service, however, left much to be desired. I'm not sure that I'd go again despite the manager agreeing and waiving the fee.

My family and I had an Afternoon Tea in The National Café and it was really nice. In spite of we were very late they treated pretty well. The food was delicious and the waiter so kind.

    Excellent choice of lunch menu
Food good and staff efficient - though stretched at beginning of service
The new decor is a real shame - bland and generic
It was fabulous, appropriate for National Gallery and atmospheric before - why did they change???
