Housed in an 18th-century building and boasting a sprawling al fresco dining area, The Nags Head is a refurbished gastro pub serving modern British food with Mediterranean influence. Its cosy interiors, including open fires, distressed wood furniture and nostalgic artwork adorning the walls, makes it an idyllic country-style retreat.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Nags Head menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include king prawn, crab and chorizo linguine, or spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at The Nags Head bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Nags Head in Essex is a 6-minute drive from Brentwood Rail Station.

This is third visit for us and although as always very welcoming the food was by far the worst I've ever had. I'm not a fussy eater and like most things but can honestly say that the fish cakes we had, although presented beautifully, were the most tasteless thing I've ever attempted to eat.

Lunch - good food, good drink selection. My only criticism would be lack of space on or around the table. Dining area very cramped (tables closely positioned) so less mobile diners would have difficulty moving through the restaurant. Room on the tables is limited also. There were 5 of us dining on a 4 seated table!!

Will not be visiting again. Braised beef was a congilled slip and the butter chick was very dry.

For the price you'd expect a quality meal but ended up with a glorified harvester.

Waited over 10 mins to be approached and seated. Then when we did get to order yet again they had run out of one of the starters we wanted (this has happened on many occasions!) I thought the starters were nice however my main course which was a roast beef was very disappointing! One of the worst roasts I've had there! Service was very slow and had to wait 45 mins for the mains to come out after our starters.

Vey nice dining pub. I had an excellent rib eye steak, my wife had the pork Sunday roast. Triple cooked chips with my steak disappointingly soggy, not crisp at all.

My daughter and I had a really lovely evening . We were very impressed with the decor and the food was to die for. We both had cod in beer batter which I recommend... and the menu was impressive.. I also sent compliments to the chef. The waitresses were pleasant and very attentive.. Definitely will be going back to try the rest of the menu...
