In an historic building right on the banks of the river Frome, The Mill in Rode is a stunning rural bar, restaurant and piece of local heritage. Hearty international dishes and real ales are served, with a large outdoor deck overlooking the water.

The Mill menu boasts a fantastic selection of dishes, ranging from British pub classics like local sausages, creamed mash and onion gravy, to speciality Carolina dry-rub pork ribs. The restaurant uses a chargrill to prepare a range of skewers, steaks and burgers, which come with wine suggestions.

Desserts at The Mill Rode include favourites like warm double chocolate brownie with Marshfield Farm ice cream, and Granny Smith apple and butterscotch crumble. A fine selection of ales comes courtesy of the Butcombe Brewery.

Offering an idyllic setting which is also available for riverside weddings, The Mill Somerset is just 17 minutes' drive from Avoncliff Rail Station.

Great welcome and good food. Steaks tender and good flavour. My wife was not so keen on a chicken dish with polenta but that's a matter of taste. Rhubarb panna cotta and lemon sorbet good too but waiter forgot spoons. Seemed to be a trend as the same waiter forgot to bring spooons for the people on the next table. Price-wise a bit on the high side (starter average £6, mains £16 with veg side dishes extra) so two courses about £22 and three about £28 without side dishes. Worth noting that sides would stretch for two to share. In previous visits the service was dreadfully slow and put us off going but we decided to give it another try. This visit was great, with quick and cheerful service despite it being a very busy evening.

Good venue good food good ambience - however, the fish pie was tasty shame about the kale which was a small portion. On asking for more I was basically told I could not have any - I took a dim view of this and was told it was because it was a fixed price 2 course lunch

Staff were welcoming and attentive. Restaurant had a good buzz, even on a Thursday evening. Menu is not extensive, but enough choice for the 4 of us. A little bit pricey but good quality of food and ingredients. Would like to have seen a couple of daily specials to add a little more variety (there were some interesting dishes on the lunch time menu board but they were not on offer in the evening).

Booking on line was simple and quick - an improvement on an experience a few months ago. The restaurant has had a serious makeover, homely decour, subtle stylish lighting and we got a really warm welcome from the two male staff we met urging the evening. The food was fantastic and we used our Butcombe card receiving a good discount on my wife's birthday. Well done you guys. We will see you soon.
