An 18th-century Cotswold stone inn, The Mermaid in Burford offers classic British food in this picturesque Oxfordshire town. With a candlelit 1st-floor restaurant, secluded courtyard and rustic bar, leaded windows overlook the front terrace, perfect to enjoy The Mermaid’s fresh homemade meals and award-winning real ales al fresco.

The Mermaid serves classic pub fare made with fine, fresh ingredients, like its popular beer-battered haddock and chips, rib-eye steak and homely Cotswold sausage and mash. Asparagus and mushroom tagliatelle, and homemade vegetable lasagne, are among the vegetarian choices.

A selection of fresh-baked filled baguettes and ploughman’s lunches feature amongst The Mermaid Inn’s lighter options, with decadent salads of smoked salmon and prawn or avocado and crab. A healthy children’s menu and traditional Sunday roasts are more reasons to visit The Mermaid.

With an extensive wine list and Cask Marque certified ales, the Mermaid bar is a relaxing place to linger over a post-dinner drink. Witney, Chipping Norton and Stow-on-the-Wold are all less than 20 minutes’ drive away.

Table was reserved for us and the staff were very attendant. Very nice Pub and location, easy to park however, the food was not very well presented and my steak and chips where very greasy. Reasonable price for the meal that we had but we where all disappointed with the food quality.

Restaurant is beautiful, cosy and romantic, very scenic setting directly on Burford High Street. We had a table upstairs and loved the low beams and the ambiente. The floor upstairs is tilting slightly which we found very quirky, but some people might find it a bit irritating - you feel a bit like you're on a ship that is lilting! Service was very friendly, but could have been a bit faster, we waited quite a while between starter and main course, and it was not even very busy at the time, from what we could see. The food was good - my husband's fish and chips was "okay" he has had better, but it was good. My rump steak was done medium-rare, as requested, I found it a bit tough though. The hand-cut chips were very good. Son's duck breast looked and tasted a treat, very nicely arranged on the plate. The girls had lasagne and stir fry, respectively, and were happy with their food. We found there was a good selection of different dishes on the menu, which was one reason we had chosen to go there, because we went with our children (in their teens and twens), plus girlfriend, and there was something for everybody. Liked the idea of fres fish on the menu on Fridays. Live music just starting downstairs in the bar area when we left - great idea for a Friday night (and we've been there before for the live music part), but since we just came there to have dinner last night, we were glad we had finished before they started - it could have been a bit loud for the diners upstairs. All in all: would recommend and will come again!

We had a lovely table upstairs which suited us well to catch up with old friends. Downstairs was very jolly with a mighty singalong going on in the conservatory. The food was served at just the right pace for us - I had the duck breast which was totally delicious. Husband had a very good steak. Friends had the duck and a Desperate Dan steak pie which defeated even a good appetite. The vegetables were cooked well and were varied. Puds had to be partaken - again very good. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and despite a very busy pub downstairs, our service was attentive and pleasant. One star off for the white Cabernet sauvignon - heavy hints of Chardonnay in the wine by the glass which was to me deeply unpleasant but this is personal choice. Well done Mermaid.
