Set in Alderly Edge, the quaint village associated with the legendary wizard after whom this pub is named, The Merlin serves a fusion of modern British and European cuisine in a cosy, traditional country pub setting. With a chandelier made entirely out of wine glasses, pony-skin-covered seats and numerous fireplaces warming it up, this pub is a homey retreat. It also enjoys a large patio for outdoor dining in warm weather.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Merlin menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest available ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include king prawn, crab and chorizo linguine, or spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at The Merlin bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Merlin in Cheshire is just a 5-minute drive from Wilmslow Rail Station.

We have been visiting the Merlin for many years but after going for lunch yesterday we were very disappointed. Three of us had fish & chips, there was little fish under the batter & I would not describe the chips as chips. They had their skins in, were very dark in colour & were soggy. They were more like wedges than chips. My Husbands fruit crumble had to be returned as it was barely warm & my Creme brûlée was not the correct texture, too firm with hardly any sugar topping. I have always maintained that the Merlins Creme brûlée is the best but this certainly wasn't. If this had been our first visit I doubt we would return. I did give feedback as we were paying. A very disappointing visit.

Dissappointing! We booked for 7.30pm on Valentines Evening. The Valentines menu was small which was fine, but I didnt expect 3 dishes on there to be unavailable due to the restaurant being busy over the weekend.mmmm.....Oh yes its Valentines weekend, thats why! So no Chateaux Briand (typical,I dont normally have steak) and 1 Ribeye left. The starter to share was average. The Ribeye we ordered had been flattened and was more like a 'minute steak'.This was supposed to be a special night and apart from the pleasant ambience, was very dissappointing.I will not be rushing back!

Good as a group to be given a round table, and the rooms are all lovely and well heated. 4 of us irdered a sharing platter- mezze, for starters, which although tasty, was rather on the skimpy side. Conversely at the opposite end, the mini desserts with a drink were very generous, and a great idea on your menu. The food and service were generally good, and we had a lovely evening. Thank you!

It wasn't as good an experience as usual. It was full with Christmas parties. We love going the Merlin as the food is usually wonderful. We got starters ok but then waited over an hour for the main course. I ordered the slow cooked beef which was worth the wait, my husband ordered the rib eye, it wasn't dry, overlooked and every mouthful was grisel. He left it, so definitely not worth the wait. I ordered a liqueur coffee only for it to come looking like a latte, it had been stirred. The staff were perfect throughout and the chef arranged a refund for the steak which was appreciated. Just unfortunate we booked when Christmas parties were rife.
