Composed of classic patterned red bricks, The Hare and Tortoise in Doncaster dates back to the 18th century. Continuing a heritage of serving food and drink, well-loved British pub cuisine can be enjoyed at The Hare and Tortoise, from the cosy hearth-fire or outside in the al fresco beer garden. It is furnished with vintage ornaments, eye-catching art and chunky oak beams to aid the rustic atmosphere.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Hare and Tortoise menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Hare and Tortoise ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

While in the country outside the city, The Hare and Tortoise is only 10 minutes’ driving from central Doncaster.

The restaurant is pleasant but unfortunately the menu seems to get more disappointing as the prices rise. The choices are more limited and the specials less special. What was once a regular haunt has become a now and again destination even though it is very convenient for us.

We have eaten here before and really enjoyed our meal however we were disappointed this time. The chips tasted like fish as though they had been fried in the same batter; which wasn't great with steak. When arrived we were told the pizza oven had broke so we couldn't have anything with flatbread or pizza and there was no lamb or duck; at 6:30 on a Saturday night this was disappointing! The brownie we ordered was delicious however the Eton mess had never been Eton mess! It was a plate of cream with a half frozen cake underneath; no meringue or fresh fruit. The pub restaurant is a lovely venue n the staff are friendly it's a shame the food really let it down this time.

Good food but very limited choice

Items on menu not available not passed onto customers until a half hour after ordering

Hunters chicken was lovely, very tasty.
    Mixed grill was fine.
Seafood risotto was over cooked with scallops but, as far as I could tell, no lobster, as advertised and 3 prawns. Not value for money.
Chicken pie -meat was quite stringy. We did make this clear to the manager.
We all ordered garlic flatbread. It was dry and burnt on one side.

overall food good, one guest's needs not listened to and meant she had to change choice and eat alone not ideal, prices are rising too . waitress quite helpful but due to guests being spread about not always easy to request other drinks , bill etc. However this was also some advantage as we did not feel hurried to eat and leave, mainly a positive experience and we will visit again
