Remotely situated in the beautiful foothills of the Peak District, The Hanging Gate in Shottlegate offers vintage and trusted pub cuisine. A 17th-century building, the extensive yet pretty ivy on the brickwork befits the durability and dependability of the pub. It features rich oak furniture, an charming old-fashioned clock, a welcoming hearth-fire and an al fresco dining area outside, from which you can enjoy the spectacular view.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Hanging Gate menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Hanging Gate ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

In Derbyshire, The Hanging Gate Shottle is only a 4-minute drive from Belper Train Station.

The range of dishes was impressive; the food my friend and I chose was well-cooked, tasty and sufficient in quantity without being over-facing. The staff were attentive and courteous. Overall a very pleasant lunch.

Lovely country pub with warm open fires. Lovely welcome from the friendly staff. The food was delicious and a little different from the specials board. What we really like is the mini pudding and coffee as this finishes a meal nicely and is certainly a big enough portion for me. Will definitely go again.

The booking service was excellent. The Hanging Gate was lovely and warm as we sat nwxt to a lovely log fire. The main dish was of good quality but the vegetables looked and tasted like they had been warmed up (apart from the lovely mashed potatoes) so they were not great. The menu is fairly fancy which didn't suit our taste but others would obviously like that.

We drove past this pub earlier in the evening and said: "that looks like a nice pub" so we decided to book a table later. We arrived and was immediately shown to a table (it was a Monday eve). It is nicely lit and appointed, tables are well spaced. Waitress (Jessica) gave us time to choose and was friendly.

Food was good. I would say slightly overpriced but with the bookatable 20% discount it was just right.

    A good experience.
