Lovely food but not enough of it. Asked for it to be replenished and was giving 4 finger sandwiches which was not enough considering there were five of us. Also they were setting up for a function which is understandable for a large hotel. However when your trying to have a peaceful afternoon tea and the doors are left wide open and the maintenance team we're in and out and drilling, not quite the atmosphere I was hoping for. When we asked for the manager he was very rude and basically told us there wasn't anything he could do. After complaining again he then took some money off the bill. It was still over £100 for 5 of us, just felt I was ripped off. I will not be returning

My husband and I stayed at Downhall Manor last weekend (18th Feb) and booked a table at the Grill room. Was a bit disappointed that the only menu, apart from the bar menu, was a valentines set menu for £35pp. I was unaware of this at the time of booking the table. I'm not a fussy person but the three options of starters were not things I liked. The waitress was very helpful and spoke to the chef who then offered me soup, which was absolutely delicious! The main was a chicken dish, which was very tender but maybe a side accompaniment of crunchy veg would of been nice as the whole dish was lacking a bit of texture with the crushed potatoes and aubergine purée. The waiter who I told this to didn't seem that bothered or interested in my comments! Overall it was lovely and would recommend it to friends. The hotel itself was lovely and breakfast was great. Would definitely return but hope not to have a set menu!

I took my mum for her birthday, she thoroughly enjoyed it!
BeUtiful & elegant surroundings, warm & friendly staff.
The festive afternoon tea was amazing and we even brought cakes home as we couldn't manage them all!
The staff sang happy birthday to my mum and even brought out a little candle stuck in a truffle for her to blow out which made her day!
The only thing I will say is that th room we were in had no music, which we could've done with.

Lovely surroundings, excellent service and a relaxed atmosphere. We really enjoyed our afternoon tea seated on comfy sofas in front of a roaring open fire.
The food was quite good, although the battenburg was alarmingly bright green & the scones hard. We did have a good choice of sandwiches though & plenty of clotted cream!

Slightly disappointing was the fact that the waitress brought our cakes in sparkly boxes described as 'your cake boxes' but when we put the cakes we couldn't eat in them were told 'you can't take those!' (She did provide us with plain cake boxes).
We actually were using a gift voucher bought for us as a wedding gift, but took our neighbours as a treat. We were, however, not best pleased to be charged £25 per head for them for a regular afternoon tea advertised on the website for £21.50. We were told that the cheapest afternoon tea cost £25 so would suggest the website is updated as it is very misleading. (It still says £21.50 a week later despite having pointed this out when we paid the bill)!
Such a shame this marred an otherwise lovely afternoon.

Very much enjoyed our experience. Food was delicious, service was good, the only thing that could be improved upon was the fact that there was no music in the restaurant, as we were early diners it felt a little lacking in atmosphere.
