Lovely food and pretty good service. It was very busy so it was a little slow to get the food. The waiters were all quite young but very pleasant and did a pretty good job. The location works well for my friends who live both in South London and Hertfordshire so convemient.

Tucked away in the historical village of Chorleywood, right beside the local cricket club ground, The Gate offers al fresco dining in its peaceful beer garden, as well as a cosy bar and restaurant. This refurbished gastro pub serves a selection of modern British dishes.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Gate menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar at The Gate restaurant showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at the bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Gate in Hertfordshire is a 3-minute drive from Chorleywood Tube Station.

It's a very erratic experience. Some days food is great. Others not so. Lovely setting and decor

Friendly staff, lovely decoration in the dining area. Had 4 roasts on our table. Meat was good, maybe more chicken and beef than on the pork roast. Probably would have preferred more vegetables - i.e. Bigger portion size and more variety. Bigger stuffing would have also been ideal. I think with a pub roast it needs to be better than you could make at home. Temperature of the vegetables was also just warm rather than hot. Having an increased variety such as cauliflower cheese, red cabbage etc would be better. Only two potatoes again is on the small size when paying £15 for a roast.
Ladies toilets could do with a lick of paint and a refresh, 2/3 were blocked with loo roll.

Pudding was really lovely- the chocolate bomb was wonderful!
Overall friendly staff and good service, would like a bit more on my plate from the roasts.

Salt and Pepper Squid starter is always excellent as are the Roasts on a Sunday, also the Cheese Board is always a good bet. Sound selection of wine if slightly over priced for a "country pub"

Worst meal ever. Manager deducted amount from the bill. Please see previous review!

A bit disorganised when we arrived at 12.15 but it soon swung into the usual efficiency

The chips we ordered with our steak were sent back twice as they looked like they were cooked in dirty oil as they looked brown and not golden or they were left over from lunchtime and warmed up

Great food selection, one party of the group commented that that was the best fish dish he had ever had
