A bit disorganised when we arrived at 12.15 but it soon swung into the usual efficiency

Tucked away in the historical village of Chorleywood, right beside the local cricket club ground, The Gate offers al fresco dining in its peaceful beer garden, as well as a cosy bar and restaurant. This refurbished gastro pub serves a selection of modern British dishes.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Gate menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar at The Gate restaurant showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at the bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Gate in Hertfordshire is a 3-minute drive from Chorleywood Tube Station.

The chips we ordered with our steak were sent back twice as they looked like they were cooked in dirty oil as they looked brown and not golden or they were left over from lunchtime and warmed up

Great food selection, one party of the group commented that that was the best fish dish he had ever had

Very slow service we had ordered 2 soups and 2 sandwiches with a small side of soup. It took 35 mins to come. When it arrived the soup was luke warm and not very tasty and the sandwiches were not to bad. The staff were very pleasant. We didn't complain at the time as were short if time!

Customer service very poor. Staff not attentive. Made food selection - 4 roast dinners to be told there were no potatoes! Had to reorder. Food portions small and lack of attention by staff meant they served my dish with the wrong side. Had to ask 4 times for a jug of tap water! End of meal waited 25 mins to pay bill but no-one attended. Had to find staff who were busy chatting. VERY POOR EXPERIENCE, FOOD OVERPRICED & SERVERS APALLING.

The vegetarian nut roast with beautifully cooked vegetables was fantastic. Sadly my partner's £21 plus rib eye steak was as tough as boots. We took home half of it for the dog!

The manager apologised and knocked off a fair chunk of the bill as no one checked if the meal was ok. Nice friendly but clueless waiting staff need basic training. Even though it was a Friday evening before Xmas, the place was only half full of diners when we left at 8.30pm.

The whole experience was well below what we have enjoyed at the Gate over some years.

Would not recommend based on this visit but it has been great in the past.

This proved to be the perfect place to meet a friend I hadn't seen for 15 years. The location was very handy, just off Jn 18 of the M40, with lots of parking space. The food, service and ambience were excellent. I would definitely come here again. Spiralized carrot salad was very tasty, as to was the mini desert and coffee
