Recommended in the Michelin, AA and Good Pub Guides among others, The Fox is a large, Edwardian-style pub in Newport. From award-winning pub group, Brunning & Price, The Fox offers a contemporary gastro pub menu in a grand setting, with an al fresco terrace.

Elegant dishes on The Fox menu feature delicate pan-fried sea bass fillets in white wine sauce, with mussels, clams, samphire and saffron potatoes, and a seared duck breast with duck hash cake, baby vegetables, kumquats and Maderia jus. Hearty options include steak and ale pie and Buttercross pork and red onion marmalade sausages with mash, while there’s a selection of light bites, sandwiches and a kids’ menu.

Warmly decorated with vintage rugs and roaring fireplaces, the largest vaulted room at The Fox in Newport opens out onto the sun-drenched garden and terrace. At the bar, silky cask ales are on tap, accompanying an extensive, sophisticated wine list.

The Fox is 5 minutes’ down the road from Newport, 6 miles from Weston Park.

We all had a lovely meal, the service was brilliant and the food was spot on. The only thing was the drinks board was not up to date.

Fantastic steak and ale pie, you must try that. And the lemon cheesecake was so light and refreshing.

A lovely country pub. Spotlessly clean. Nice loos. Always friendly, helpful but professional staff. Food of above average quality and priced accordingly. We always use The Fox for special occasions and entertaining guests. Always warm and comfortable. Especially nice outside in the Summer months.
The sea bass with pepper sauce was excellent, as was my dessert of lemon cheesecake with rhubarb and custard ice cream on freshly stewed rhubarb.

Excellent service. Great food. Relaxed atmosphere. Lots of room. Clean bright interior.
Not our first visit will not be the last.

My only criticism of the Fox, which I have visited many times, is that on arrival my wife and I, quite often, have been left standing at the bar, sometimes for 5 minutes or so, whilst bar staff whizz to and fro heads firmly fixed in a forward position and ignoring us. The Fox needs a dedicated receptionist to book people in and get them to their tables.
Otherwise the service and food is generally excellent which is why we continue to visit monthly when we make regular visits to Shropshire.
