Formerly a hotel and built on Roman graves, The Fox and Roman in York is furnished with classic Victorian oak and brickwork and Roman artefacts from the site. The country pub boasts seasonal British pub cuisine, which can be enjoyed by the warm hearth, or in the al fresco beer garden.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Fox and Roman menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Fox and Roman ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

The Fox and Roman is adjacent to the York Racecourse, and is merely 5 minutes’ drive from York.

Very average. How does a pub run out of beer?????? This is the third time the Fox and Roman
has managed to run out of Black Sheep Bitter! (And the second choice had run out too) NOT good
management........ we left early and went down the road to a pub that had beer....

I had meal from'specials' section sea bream rending and it was really good although advertised with pak choir and there wasn't any. Lovely to have additional choice from more traditional meals. Also the wine list was reasonable and varied.

Last night we were very disappointed with the food, my chicken was very dry and hard, my wife's vegetables were very over cooked. We dine here often and last night was a bit of a disappointment.

Service a little slow, but it was busy and we didn't mind, waiter was very nice and helpful.

My waiter was lovely, unfortunately I didn't catch his name. The food was mixed (again) - I chose the mushrooms for my starter - delicious, but there could've been more sauce, and the bread was two quite long pieces, not the rustic bread I have had before. For main, I chose southern fried chicken and straw fries - never again. It came stacked pretty high in a small bowl, several pieces - one or two would've been much better. The chicken tasted nice when you finally got to it, but it was difficult. The 'straw' fries were just small, thin chips. I'd not eaten straw fries chips before so looked at pics on the Net - nothing like them was served. I then decided to have a pudding and the pudding was delicious with an Americano. The ambience was spoilt a little bit by a large party who had several small children who were allowed to crawl around near the walkway where staff were coming back and forth with drinks and food - despite being told a couple of times, they didn't move, just carried on drinking. Not good - well done staff for trying.
