I find most menus at Indian restaurants serve similar dishes. This one is different. Some very interesting dishes available. Staff polite and attentive.

Voted East London’s best Indian restaurant for 3 years running, The Empress in Whitechapel has been serving authentic Indian and Bangladeshi food since 1993. Classic curry house favourites and regional specialities burst with aromatic flavours, with the Empress chefs exhibiting a selection of dishes from their home towns.

The diverse Empress menu features traditional north Indian dishes like hot garlic chilli chicken and lamb rezala. Tandoori classics include marinated king prawns, while duck and vegetable join the meaty choice of biryanis.

Tempting, fresh sides of spinach, okra and chickpeas are given spicy twists, with tasty chutneys and breads also accompany your meal. Personal recommendations from the Empress team include salmon korma and slow cooked Khala lamb bhuna.

Simply decorated and subtly lit, the wooden floored Empress restaurant is an inviting venue to enjoy fine Indian cuisine. Easy to spot on Leman Street, The Empress in London is a 6-minute walk from Aldgate East Tube Station.

I dined at lunch time with some engineering friends. The restaurant was full but no delays were experienced. The staff were very friendly and game for a laugh. The food is the best Indian food I know.
