A grand, grade II-listed building in Putney, The Duke’s Head presents modern British dining and a comprehensive selection of world wines and award-winning beers. Split into 4 different rooms, this Victorian-built pub and diner stands on the start line of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race.

The cray fish and Sipsmith bloody mary gin cocktail makes for an interesting starter on The Duke’s Head menu, and can be followed by the tender rioja and balsamic-braised lamb shank, or chef’s choice of mussels with hand-cut chips. Dine in the elegant riverside Coxswain Dining Room, or in the private first floor Wolsey Room, which looks out over the river.

The Rowing Club at The Duke’s Head is a buzzing social hub of live acoustic music, film screenings and comedy, and is on the lower ground floor and terrace, whilst the Duke’s bar occupies the upper ground. Here, an eclectic selection of wines is on offer alongside Young’s ales and craft beers.

London pub The Duke’s Head was highly commended for Pub of the Year in the Wandsworth Business Awards 2013. It sits on the River Thames by Putney Bridge.

My partner and I enjoyed our Sunday Roast lunch on 21 February 2016.
The food was excellent but the service was slow and laissez-faire.
We ordered our desert and our order was forgotten about. We had to re-order after waiting for at least 15 minutes.
The waitress apologised and said she had forgotten to put our order through the till.
As a concession we were not charged for the desert.

It was a great table by the window overlooking the river, with a bench against the wall - always good for the kids. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. The bread arrived quickly and the food did too. Additional drinks were seen-to quickly. Plenty of serviettes. We were allowed to stay on for puddings after some of us had left, and there was never any pressure to vacate the table. There wasn't much choice of drinks for the children, but we liked they way they did small versions of the adult food.

The restaurant was surprisingly quiet - there were only three tables for a Friday evening, and stayed that way till after 8:30pm. However, the service was excellent, as was the food. I'm vegetarian, so do not eat out too much (who wants to pay a lot for 1 choice of risotto, or a pasta dish over and over again?), but the Cheddar souffle was truly excellent, as was the toffee cake dessert. I might even say the souffle was inspired... My partners Pig's cheeks were not as good; she claimed it was a bit dry, and could have used a good sauce. ONly downside - the outside street lights were very intrusive, compared to the more subdued interior lighting, which was not really suited to the space.

I really like the Dukes Head, the ambience is nice, the food is excellent and cooked to the best quality. The venue is nice and comfortable. Staff are nice and very helpful. To sum it up it's just what Putney needed.
