A cornerstone of the community, The Duke’s Head is a quaint village gastro pub. A lush garden is dotted with picnic benches and has a sunny patio.

Offering a refined take on trusty pub classics, The Duke’s Head menu includes dishes like crab and crayfish salad with duck egg mayonnaise, or crispy Great Garnett's pork belly with colcannon potatoes. A menu for ‘small people’ is filled with wholesome treats, like king prawn spaghetti, or breaded bacon and chicken drumsticks.

An ever-expanding stock of real ales and draught beers take centre stage at the bar, and a carefully sourced list of international wines compiles great easy drinking bottles. Nostalgic flavours for dessert include Bramley apple and golden delicious apple tart, or raspberry and basil creme brulee.

Infinitely relaxed, the charming dining room features plush leather furnishings, cosy low ceilings and 2 roaring log fires. The Duke’s Head sits in the idyllic village of Hatfield Broad Oak, 7 miles from Bishop’s Stortford.

booked a table for 2pm. Eventually got sat down at 2:35. Starters didn't arrive until 3pm. Mains took a while also. They plainly could not cope with number of customers and had overbooked.

The food itself was excellent. It was clearly very busy on the Sunday lunch we had and unfortunately they were understaffed that day so ordering was delayed. That said the staff were very friendly and helpful and were doing their very best. Because it was so busy the noise level was higher that we would normally expect which made conversation more difficult. However, this would not prevent us going again at perhaps a less busy time to experience again as the food was very good.

Nice village pub, starters were nice, both our mains were below average and desert was ok. My wife had a main from the specials, lamb shank, which wasn't tender like you exppect with lamb. Also the beetroot mash and chorizo and tomato ragout didn't go, too conflicting a taste with the lamb. I would say the menu is slightly overpriced, for a pub to serve food at this price the standard must be higher I think. Maybe on another day ordering a different main the review may be slightly more positive.

Menu choices were excellent and the food was great. The pub was decorated and furnished really well with a good atmosphere - I liked the Beatles' photos in the gents...

Food is always very well presented. Tasty, hot, not what I would cook at home. Makes for an enjoyable eating experience. Staff friendly but not overly so.

I would definitely recommend The Dukes Head. It had lovely ambience with modern but cosy decor. Five of us had the offer of two courses with a glass of Prosecco. The choices on the set menu was very tempting. I could have had all the dishes. My friends had the chicken liver pate for starters and said it was very strong but they enjoyed it. I had the roasted tomatoes tart tartin which was delicious and king prawns spaghetti which was very nice. Will definitely visit again.
