As shown by the charming black and white timber design and the cosy log-fire, The Crown – Colchester is a distinctive 17th-century Tudor building. The hearty British pub cuisine can be enjoyed from the al fresco beer garden which looks on to the pretty countryside and is near to the distinctive Ardleigh Resevoir.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Crown menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Crown ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

The Crown is just 11 minutes’ drive from Colchester Train Station.

We were really looking forward to revisiting the Crown for the first time in 5 years. The food was awful. The meat in the pie was terribly undercooked, the vegetables had been sitting around and clearly reheated. Limp and dry. The chips were tepid and to top it all, there was no toilet paper. We promptly left, vowing to cross it off our list of favourites. Massive disappointment and quite strange, as the restaurant was packed with mainly older generation diners. I could have cried..we have 4 kids and it was our first night out in about a year.

    Booking was easy.
The service right from when I arrived was impeccable. I was shown to a table promptly. Unfortunately my friend got lost and didnt join me for nearly 1.5 hours, the young waiter was very attentive and made an effort to check on me while i was waiting. all staff we encountered were polite, smiled and engaged in conversation. They looked like they enjoyed what they do rather than it being just a job.
The only negative thing that I can find is that as a vegan the menu is severely limited. The risotto would have been an option, but it has cheese mixed in it. The carrot etc burger was lovely but i had to have it without the brioche bun, it eould seem simple to provide a non dairy bun. There are no vegan desserts. It would be simple to have vegan ice cream which is readily avaiable.
The menu is really good and varied, but just not for vegans.
I believe that it is possible to eat good food without resorting to using animals, usually with cruel consequences.

Disappointed as we (6 of us) went for the £14.95 two course deal, 4 of us ordered rump steak, none available!! Then ordered apple pie for dessert as there was only 3 options, also not available! I'd understand if it was a weekend but it was a Monday!!

FIRST I MUST PRAISE THE STAFF. THEY ARE VERY PLEASANT AND HELPFUL. HOWEVER, BOTH MY GUESTS, MY HUSBAND AND MYSELF FOUND IT RATHER COLD IN THE BUILDING. FINALLY I WAS UNFORTUNATE ENOUGH TO FIND MY FIRST DRINK, FIRST MAIN MEAL AND FIRST SWEET CHOICES NOT AVAILABLE. MY DRINK WOULD HAVE BEEN A SIMPLE ORANGE AND LEMONADE-NO ORANGE AVAILABLE, THEN THE CHICKEN ROAST SHOWING ON THE MAIN MENU-NOT AVAILABLE AND THEN THE MINI PECAN SWEET NOT AVAILABLE. AND ONE OF THE VEGETARIAN MEALS ONE OF MY GUESTS WANTED WASN'T AVAILABLE. PERHAPS THIS IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE IT WAS A MONDAY. IF THIS IS THE CASE I SHALL HAVE TO REMEMBER SHOULD I BE MEETING UP ON THIS DAY IN FUTURE.

The Crown doesn't open until 12 something we didn't know. We had a table booked for 12 and were left standing outside waiting for the doors to open gone 12. Staff were aware but ignored us. Food was vastly overpriced for a few chips and fish that was overcooked and chewy!!. Shame it has a lovely atmosphere but on the last few occasions we have been the food has been really poor. We really couldn't recommend this restaurant to a friend. This used to be a lovely restaurant with a value for money menu but now food prices have risen and the food quality has dropped.

We were a party of 4 and got the table I requested.
The meals themselves were pretty rubbish.
    I paid £12.50 for a burger and 11 chips.
My wife had Yorkshire ham which was jellyfied one on my guests had the chicken pie which was a large crust but very very sparse of filling.
I did have a moan at the waitress but it fell on deaf ears.
My guests had come a long way and the meal spoilt the day.

3rd time back in a month but last nights visit disappointing. Very busy and had to wait over an hour for our main course and dessert. Overall we were there for nearly 3 hours. Lovely waitress though just shame about the wait.
