Faced with the famous wildlife reserve, Southampton Commons, The Cowherds is situated next to a pretty wild haven, and also near central Southampton and the university. The charming rustic design reflects the traditional British pub menu, and the al fresco beer garden has beautiful views over the Commons.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Cowherds menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Cowherds ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

The Cowherds is only a 6-minute drive from Southampton Central Railway Station.

My friends and I had a most enjoyable evening at The Cowherds. The staff were very nice and friendly and the service was excellent. The food was a good price and tasty. There was a nice and relaxed atmosphere there. The table where we sat was in a cosy alcove by the open fire which was comfortable. The whole evening was a pleasant experience.

Generally good, service was good, waiter attentive, ambience good. In terms of the Food, partly OK, partly not: Starter prawns, lobster avacardo - not the best, thin sliver of avacardo, light on the seafood too, but lots of leaves. Main Pizza was good, freshly made, light crust, although could do with more topping to the edge - the last inch around the edge was bare. Desert: I had the Bakewell which was a bit disappointing. Dry and oddly served broken in pieces in a dish with ice cream. Was expecting a warm moist desert on a plate.

Pretty good overall. Certainly busy with a good atmosphere. Food was very nice. Service could have been sharper but we were in no hurry so not an issue for us. Had to ask them to take the 20% offer from the bill. The waitress wasn't aware of the offer at all!

Nice environment to eat in; the risotto was served up cold and had to be sent back for re-heating; the food was neverthless very tasty if a bit on the luckewarm side; service staff seemed rushed off their feet yet the restauarent was probabaly only about 40% full (5.30 to 6.00pm); neverthless the staff were as pleasant and attentive as they could be.

The impression was that there were insufficient staff on duty in the kitchen and the restaurant for the number of customers.

We had a 20% off deal and had to send the original bill back for adjustment as we had been charged full price.

We still quite enjoyed the experience - had some of the food not been just warm would have given it 4 stars.

Good service, nice tasty roast, good portions. Parking a bit tight.

I had Roast beef dinner and my guest had the Turkey roast. They were both delicious, though there was not a lot of it. The choice of desserts were disappointing, with nothing that inspired us to try, so we chose to not have one.
Came away feeling that we had not had quite enough to fill us. What we did have though was very nice indeed.
