Lovely afternoon tea with lots of sandwhiches, cakes, scones and pots of tea. The table looked very nice and the overall standard and service was very good. The staff were superb and could not have done more to be of help and nothing was too much trouble. As it was for my elderly mums birthday, I was even more surprised and delighted that they all came out to sing her happy birthday and bought a little cake with candles in. This is my second time here for afternoon tea and I will definitely be going back again. Thank you for making it a really pleasant afternoon.

Booked here for Fathers Day. Was worried initially as it was a last minute booking, why would they be available?
They need to advertise more as this place is fantastic. We all loved our food and the portions were big. I would definitely return, although we felt like VIP's with it being quiet we enjoyed our meal. We felt that people are missing out!

Good food but nobodyelse in the restaurant. Chelmsford lacks good restaurants and the County hotel does not market itself to encourage people to eat there

Really lovely experience all the staff were very helpful and the service was good. Great to have coffees in the lounge first and although the only ones in restaurant had a lovely round table in a select corner by window. Good to have homemade soup and all the dishes were great. The chocolate pudding was to die for.

Great food, very quiet, little atmosphere.

The service was very attentive, with no undue delays between courses. The ambience was pleasant if a little quiet and the food was very enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed the devilled spatchcock and my friends said the cod was excellent.

Staff were friendly. Sandwiches in the afternoon tea were great but cakes were dissappointing. They did not match what was on the menu and were less exciting and less tasty than what was promised. Instead of a choux pastry swan we had an eclair which was overcooked and with a messy smear of untempered chocolate. Instead of a chocolate macaroon we had a cupcake topped with vanilla cream that you would make with a child at home. The chefs clearly overordered on rasperries as they were in 3 of the 4 cakes (in the menu they only featured in 1). The glazed strawberry tart wasnt glazed or strawberry. And the staff did not explain or tell us the cakes were different, it was like they hoped we wouldnt notice it was all a cheaper substandard version.
Considering this afternoon tea is the most expensive in chelmsford it was also the least good.
