Lovely 2 course meal - couldn't resist the desserts so 3 out of 4 of us went for a third course. Nice bread and herby/garlic butter too.

One of Exeter’s longest-standing and most renowned restaurants, The Conservatory building dates back to 1600, and boasts an original, restored Tudor panel wall in the dining room. The menu fuses using classic English cuisine with an innovative Mediterranean influence, resulting in imaginative, modern European fare.

Seared scallops with blood orange and bok choi and Cornish crab arancini with apple salsa exemplify the restaurant’s quirky take on favourite dishes. Hearty dishes such as braised blade of beef with swede and smoked cheddar gratin are just as popular.

Iced peanut butter parfait with dark chocolate ganache and banana curd is a must-try dessert on The Conservatory menu. Early bird and express lunch menus are readily available, alongside a substantial wine list. Award-winning, local organic ales can also be sipped alongside the food.

True to its name, The Conservatory in Exeter boasts light and airy surroundings, creating a bright, relaxed setting. With Exeter Cathedral on its doorstep, The Conservatory is found just a 6-minute walk away from Exeter Train Station.

We were greeted politely and offered a choice of tables. The waitress was very attentive and gave us excellent service. The atmosphere was calming and we were pleased that there was no loud music, as in some restaurants. The food was presented well and was delicious.

This restaurant is exceptional in its value. The food is exquisitely fresh, imaginative, cooked to perfection and costs less for three courses at lunch-time than for one pub-grub dish. What's more, the drinks are reasonably priced and the service is friendly and informal. All this and you even get starched cloth table napkins and a bit of history. What more could you ask?

We booked a meal at the Conservatory in Exeter to celebrate my wife's birthday yesterday. We arrived at 7.30 and were shown to a table. Actually we were offered any table as it turned out we were the only diners there.
Saying that the waitress was great, the food was amazing, but the atmosphere was....Well quite subdued! We found a wonderful dessert wine on the list to have with our puddings, California Orange Muscat, which really added to the flavour of them, well worth trying.
Overall though it was disappointing, after all going to a restaurant is as much about the ambience and atmosphere, sadly last night it was distinctly lacking any.

Overall we were disappointed. Having been placed on a table downstairs near to toilets, we sat in cold isolated splendour throughout the meal. Initial service was slow. Menu wasn't particularly enthralling but portions were generous. The hake (could have been grilled more ) sat on a bed of cabbage and the veg sides contained the same. The baby leeks were distinctly under cooked. Wine list wasn't overly adventurous and we only realised later that we had been served a Viura instead of a Chinon blanc. The chocolate tort had a meat like flavour. Wouldn't go back, expensive for what it actually was.

Don't be put off by the street door with just a passage. Once inside you are in for a treat. It's a quirky cosy dining room with a Tudor panel running down one side. The ambience is conversation not Muzak and the attention to detail sublime. The menu is imaginative with plenty of choices but ingredients, composition and presentation are exceptional. To top it all the extensive wine list is fairly priced and features a number of local wines. We had a wonderful experience and vote this the best restaurant in town

The food was very pleasant. The outward appearance of the restaurant was poor also being located in a rundown area of Exeter. Although some may like the quirky set up of the restaurant it was not impressive and a little tired. We had to ask for a drink as the waitress appeared preoccupied. Overall not a great success.
