Overlooking the intriguing ruins of an old monastery, The Castell Mynach near Cardiff delivers traditional British pub cuisine in a beautiful country atmosphere, but remains comfortably close to the city. The seasonally prepared food can be enjoyed in front of the cosy log fire, or al fresco from the beer garden with views of the monastery.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Castell Mynach menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Castell Mynach ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

The Castell Mynach is a mere 7-minute drive from Pontyclun and is in .

Restaurant was very care worn and uncomfortably hot. Food was poor and not a place I would visit again any time soon.

Really y lovely meal.. A little disappointed that there is no longer a dedicated Gluten Free menu although the staff did their best to help this meant that my choice was very restricted.

Very friendly waitress, very cheerful and efficient. Average pub grub, nothing brilliant but OK for an evening with friends. The starter of scallops and king prawns I garlic butter with rustic bread was delicious, the garlic butter was best I have ever tasted. Haloumi in a batter and deep fried was unusual and different, it came with a tiny pot of gherkin relish but could have done with a bigger zingy and tasty relish. The Eton tidy cheesecake was tasty but could have been presented a bit better instead of just having the Eton splodged on the cheesecake.

The manager rang us to say that there had been a RTA nearby and there might be a problem in getting there, which was very good. The restaurant part is very pleasant if a little warm. We all ordered steak which came with a fritter of thyme and something else. The fritters were so crispy it was very difficult to cut without bits flying everywhere. I had a fillet and asked for medium but it was a little over cooked and tasted of burnt charcoal which spoilt the flavour. The cherry tomatoes were lovely and much nicer than the usual "half a tomato " The chips were okay, typical fat pub chips and nothing special despite being thrice cooked. The Chilean Sauvignon Blanc was pleasant and the men said the Merlot was fine.
Overall I think it was okay but I wouldn't have a steak there again. Will stick to Miller and Carter for steaks, they are all owned by Mitchell and Butlers which is a shame that one of their establishment chains cooks great steaks while the other not so good.
