The Canonbury Tavern in Islington is a renowned favourite for pub goers in North London and further afield. With a relaxed interior and an expansive landscaped garden in which George Orwell wrote part of his iconic novel 1984, The Canonbury serves both pub classics and more gourmet fare.

Guests who want classic pub food can choose from a selection of burgers, fish and chips, steaks and sandwiches from the boards, while those who want something more adventurous can choose from The Canonbury Tavern menu. Succulent pig’s cheek and oyster mushrooms on toast with cider cream and pomegranate makes for the perfect starter.

Hake with ginger clams, oyster and coriander broth and sesame dumpling is a highlight of the main courses, whilst desserts include the white chocolate mousse with ginger chocolate crumble.

Soak up the sun in the beautiful garden or dine inside for a homely pub experience in the Grade II-listed building. Highbury and Islington Station is a 5-minute walk away.

We had an excellent meal, excellent waiting staff and fantastic table in garden - couldn't have been more enjoyable.

Roast was very overpriced and overdone

Good, imaginative food. Reasonable wine list/prices. Good service from the one over stretched waitress. When the restaurant gets a large group, around 24 people, there should be more than one person serving all the tables.

The dinner at Canonbury Tavern was exceptional! We will definitely come back very frequently, because the restaurant has a beautiful interior and a nice garden, the service was extremely nice and the food was amazing. We can definitely recommend the lamb and the hake as main courses and the "Very spicy Virgin Mary" we ordered was perfect (and very spicy indeed). The prices are comparable to other restaurants of that type and completely appropriate.

Great evening at a pub which feels like a local and has great food. Our party of six ate on Sunday evening; the dining room was fairly quiet and the bar was busy. Service was efficient and friendly. Our mains included lamb canon, fish and chips and pork belly. Generous portions and everyone delighted with the quality. Not all of us could manage a pudding but those who did enjoyed profiteroles with cinder toffee ice cream and blueberry sponge. We had a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon blanc and an Australian Shiraz Viognier and the total bill came to £180. In summary excellent value and a really enjoyable evening out.
