Surrounded by lush Lancashire landscape, The Assheton Arms is housed in a charming Grade II-listed site. A range of speciality seafood heads a menu of British gastro pub delicacies.

Compiled by amply-experienced chef Antony Shirley, The Assheton Arms menu offers a mix of home-grown classics and inventive international recipes. Signature favourites include Malaysian seafood curry, or beef and Black Sheep ale pot pie. A daily-changing menu showcasing the freshest daily catches includes options like whole grilled plaice, roasted monkfish, or king scallops and oysters. A fun children’s menu is served for Assheton’s younger diners.

Old school desserts at The Assheton in Clitheroe offer comforting flavours; indulgences include steamed syrup sponge with proper custard, or vanilla brulee with praline shortbread. A lengthy wine list featuring carefully sourced bottles is offset by a stock of silky smooth real ales.

A hive of gourmet activity in the quaint village of Downham, The Assheton restaurant sits 9 minutes’ drive from central Clitheroe.

We are regulars here - apart from the food which is invariably good, the staff and ambience add to the experience. The menu has been revised recently and I tried the chicken and ham pot pie which was very good but big enough to serve three! My partner was disappointed to find the ribs had disappeared from the menu. There is always a wide choice of specials.
    Deserts are inventive.

Nice fresh food but we would rather sit in the upstairs dining area than downstairs.

The location in Downham, the bar, the restaurant, the menu (especially the chalk board), the wine list, and the quick and efficient service were all very good indeed.
Not an inexpensive Sunday lunch, but very good!

This was the first time we have visited Assheton Arms. The service was amazing very professional but also very friendly. There was so much to choose from on the menu it took us ages to decide but we were never rushed. When our food was served it was truly delicious. The service and food was so good we have booked to stay for a special wedding anniversary that we have coming up later this year. Would not hesitate to recommend the Ashetton Arms and we will definitely be back.

Very nice ambience. Friendly staff. Good beer and wine. Good menu choice and the food was also well presented. The ham hock terrine starter was delicious.
