Praised by renowned critics Giles Coren and Jay Rayner, Thackeray’s Tunbridge Wells serves fine French food in the former home of the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. Built in the traditional Kentish style, the 17th-century building provides a unique setting for the flavour-packed modern French menu.

Created by head chef Richard Phillips, the Thackeray’s menu changes regularly to offer local and seasonal ingredients at their best. With each dish exquisitely presented, expect the likes of pot roasted mallard duck with a reduced sherry glaze, or the rich roasted loin of venison with sautéed foie gras, potato fondant, butternut squash, honey-glazed parsnip and a dark chocolate and juniper jus.

Desserts at Thackeray’s restaurant are every bit as imaginative. Savour the bitter chocolate and clementine jaffa cake with clementine gel and poached kumquats, or the Italian lime torte with lemongrass and black pepper crumble, lime leaf syrup, almond sponge and bay leaf ice cream.

Boasting a Japanese terrace for al fresco dining, Thackeray’s Kent offers fine dining in a historic tranquil setting. Tunbridge Wells town centre is a short walk away.

The food, service and ambience was as good as ever. We chose the three course lunch which was very good value. However, I was very disappointed that the restaurant does not take American Express. That is how I wished to pay and I am not happy the restaurant didn't give me that choice. They don't dictate to me what I should eat, so why dictate to me how I can pay ?

We always enjoy our visits to Thackerays. Booking is easy, Reception immaculate and service very high class indeed, especially considering that Sunday lunch is a busy time for you. For once, we do have a minor request. The two of us who chose the lamb felt that it might have been just a little less 'bleu'. We would have liked the fat crisped up a bit. The quail were wonderful and so were the puddings. The event was for my godson's 40th birthday and I know he felt appropriately rewarded.

Gorgeous!! Hadn't been for a number of years and the standard is still first class. Stunning, quality food, friendly and helpful staff and definitely our no 1 place to eat in Tunbridge Wells. A little pricier than we remember but definitely worth it.

Absolute perfection. Fantastic meal , service and atmosphere . Excellent value too. Really nice staff too .

One of the best, if not THE best, meal we can remember having.

Thank you for making our wedding anniversary really special .

Will be coming back soon !

    Highly recommended.

Hugely disappointing experience. Stiffly formal, unsmiling service, staff with no charisma or warmth. Pretentious. Food was good but overpriced. The waiter from Puglia hung around the tables in an unrelaxed manner - more concerned with filling up glasses with wine and folding napkins when diners went to restrooms than being friendly and welcoming. We would definitely not return. It was particularly disappointing as we went out for a special meal to celebrate my husband's birthday (a fact that came up when booking was confirmed during the week, but no acknowledgement during the evening).

From start to finish we could not fault the service. We had the three course menu and all dishes were Michelin star standard in presentation and taste. The puddings were particularly strong. The complimentary amuse bouche and different types of bread were a lovely touch. Only negative was it was 25 a head not 20/ I presume because it was a Saturday lunch. We were happy to pay this but not clearly advertised.
