Praised by renowned critics Giles Coren and Jay Rayner, Thackeray’s Tunbridge Wells serves fine French food in the former home of the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. Built in the traditional Kentish style, the 17th-century building provides a unique setting for the flavour-packed modern French menu.

Created by head chef Richard Phillips, the Thackeray’s menu changes regularly to offer local and seasonal ingredients at their best. With each dish exquisitely presented, expect the likes of pot roasted mallard duck with a reduced sherry glaze, or the rich roasted loin of venison with sautéed foie gras, potato fondant, butternut squash, honey-glazed parsnip and a dark chocolate and juniper jus.

Desserts at Thackeray’s restaurant are every bit as imaginative. Savour the bitter chocolate and clementine jaffa cake with clementine gel and poached kumquats, or the Italian lime torte with lemongrass and black pepper crumble, lime leaf syrup, almond sponge and bay leaf ice cream.

Boasting a Japanese terrace for al fresco dining, Thackeray’s Kent offers fine dining in a historic tranquil setting. Tunbridge Wells town centre is a short walk away.

We went to Thakeray's for a Friday lunch having intended to go for quite a time but not quite made it. It had been a long time since our last visit. It was not bad but certainly did not match its reputation. The biggest disappointment was the service which was entirely functional and lacked any warmth or engagement, and that was not because it was busy as when we arrived there was only one other table being served. It is the difference between a restaurant where you are served by a welcoming, passionate owner and one where there are waiters just doing their job. When we asked about one of the items, the waiter confessed he did not know as the menu had changed recently - really poor in a high class restaurant - and he made no effort to find out. The food itself was good, but not great - the courses are imaginative but lacked something. For instance, whilst I like my lamb on the rare side, it was scarcely cooked, had too much fat and certainly did not melt in the mouth. The '3 courses for £20' was a bit misleading as many of the choices carried a supplement. As the restaurant was quiet, there was not much of an atmosphere. For £20 it was fair value but we won't be returning in a hurry. If the service had been better, we would be more likely to recommend it.

My favourite restaurant. Every single mouthful is a delight; the quality is consistent, the staff are very friendly and efficient, all for great value - what's not to love!

    Terrific meal.

A simple two course lunch, (never a cheap as you think it will be), but very tasty - delicate flavours, light sauces, delicious home-made breads, overly fatty lamb (this time), not loaded platefuls but enough! Asparagus with a duck yoke and parma ham was very lightly cooked and flavoursome; the lamb (poorly trimmed) pink and on a lightly cooked bed of green veg and pasta (much, much nicer than it sounds!). Can't comment on my partner's choices - I never got a forkful!

Mildly unimpressed by the wine list, not vast and pricey; £43 for an average Pouilly Fuisse is steep, house champagne at £12 a glass sadly as expected.

Food was very good. We were surprised how full we felt after our meal. The chocolate pudding looked harmless, tasted amazing and was so filling I couldn't finish it. We loved the special anniversary pudding that was brought out after our dessert!!! We did manage to eat it but was very full at the end !

Wonderful experience. Lovely elegant interior, delicious food and exceptional service. The set lunch menu for £21 offers exceptional with several choices. We had an amuse bouche of veloute with spiced potatoes, delicious choice of breads with smoked butter, jerusalem artichoke soup and tian of crab, poached pollock in a mussel and crab broth with saffron potatoes, and to finish rum-soaked pineapple tarte tatin. All the food was exceptional. We will definitely return and highly recommend.
