Booked a table for coffee and beers for 2 people. Staff were friendly and welcoming and prices were pretty reasonable as well. I would go back again in the future

A funky blend of casual cafe and modern restaurant, Spoon in Edinburgh Old Town draws diners in with its inventive menu of Scottish and European recipes, freshly made cakes, and simple style.

Wholesome, healthy recipes feature throughout the Spoon menu, with plenty of gluten-free and dairy-free options. Regional flavours are showcased in dishes like Scottish asparagus with lemon and chilli mash and romesco sauce, and there are fresh seafood options such as chargrilled herring fillet with fennel, watercress and lemon. Exotic tastes from overseas can be found in dishes like the saag aloo with coriander and lime yoghurt, while the sides range from patatas bravas to a selection of Scottish cheeses.

There are a great selection of freshly made cakes to enjoy throughout the day at Spoon Edinburgh, while the concise wine list includes bottles from the old and new worlds. Brunch is also a popular option here, with crowd pleasing choices ranging from rolls with sausage, egg and black pudding, through to toasted waffles with bacon, blueberries and maple syrup.

Moments from the Festival Theatre Edinburgh, Spoon offers pre-theatre menus, while Edinburgh Waverley Rail Station is only 10 minutes' walk away.

The food was just average and the presentation rather poor. We had scrambled eggs and a fruit salad. The coffee and tea was great. Unfortunately it was absolutely freezing in the cafe.
The staff was friendly enough but came across rather bored and not particularly interested in their job.

The food was excellent, though the soup was not very hot when it was served. We did not order any alcoholic drinks, so I can only speak for the soft drinks, which were good. The only major "complaint" is that the waiter was rather cold: he said little to nothing at all, and didn't look at us much; not very relatable or cheery. Other than that, love the place. The atmosphere is very bohemian and relaxed, I quite like it for it's suitability to all ages.

Our daughter lives in Edinburgh and has visited Spoons before. She recommended it as we and 2 friends were visiting. We were most impressed with the professionalism, courtesy, attentiveness and knowledge of the 2 staff who looked after us. We think one was Lorna who was celebrating her birthday the following day so many happy returns to her. The food was very well presented and tasted really good, and, although we said there was no rush, Lorna did check whether we were en route to the theatre which we were not. Our daughter had one complaint as she still felt a little hungry at the end but if you knew about her life style: she gets through a lot of calories!! Thanks to all the team

Have spent many an evening as a guest during the Edinburgh Fringe when it has been exciting chance to people spot but thoroughly enjoyed a more chilled atmosphere last night.

Very cheerful, perfectly flexible and convenient pre-opera restaurant. Menu always interesting.

Could benefit from better sound-proofing as it is sometimes difficult to hear companions at the same table
