A funky blend of casual cafe and modern restaurant, Spoon in Edinburgh Old Town draws diners in with its inventive menu of Scottish and European recipes, freshly made cakes, and simple style.

Wholesome, healthy recipes feature throughout the Spoon menu, with plenty of gluten-free and dairy-free options. Regional flavours are showcased in dishes like Scottish asparagus with lemon and chilli mash and romesco sauce, and there are fresh seafood options such as chargrilled herring fillet with fennel, watercress and lemon. Exotic tastes from overseas can be found in dishes like the saag aloo with coriander and lime yoghurt, while the sides range from patatas bravas to a selection of Scottish cheeses.

There are a great selection of freshly made cakes to enjoy throughout the day at Spoon Edinburgh, while the concise wine list includes bottles from the old and new worlds. Brunch is also a popular option here, with crowd pleasing choices ranging from rolls with sausage, egg and black pudding, through to toasted waffles with bacon, blueberries and maple syrup.

Moments from the Festival Theatre Edinburgh, Spoon offers pre-theatre menus, while Edinburgh Waverley Rail Station is only 10 minutes' walk away.

We enjoyed a light lunch here - 2 adults and 2 children. Relaxed and informal, nice menu. Not a specially child friendly menu but my daughter enjoyed smoke salmon and scrambled eggs from the breakfast menu. Great coffee too.

Great venue, tasty food and friendly service. Relaxed but somehow elegant at the same time.

What a fantastic experience! We were running 35 minutes late and we were met by a cheery no problem attitude. So welcoming! But we were going to the ballet and time was tight. We only had 45 minutes to eat and the restaurant was full. We ate in 40 minutes. The waiting staff and chef bust a gut to meet our demands. What a rewarding experience!!!

Interesting menu with a range of options to suit most tastes. Quirky, retro decor.

Spoon is a constant favourite. This was a pre-theatre trip (it's ideally located for the Festival Theatre) so we had the pre-theatre menu. That meant excellent chicken broth to start for me followed by an unusual and very nice mushroom and barley bolognese. My girlfriend had partridge, cod and sticky toffee pudding (with which I helped out a bit), with no weak links. Bottle of Schiehallion beer for me, glass of pinot grigio for her. Service at Spoon can occasionally be a little on the leisurely side, but last night it was very prompt, even though the place was as busy as I can recall seeing it. The whole experience was first rate.
